FRANCISCO NEWMAN ASBHS President CHARLES HARRIS Vice-President LINDA SCHACHT Secretary BRUCE VERMUELEN Treasurer The President’s Message This passing term saw many things besides the traditional return of Spring. The highly representative and colorful Board of Control naturally made a few mistakes, and differed on issues, but without their sacrifices, time, and ideas, the Spring term could not have been a success. One need not look into the past in search of Berkeley High’s excellence. The drama department’s presentation of two spectacular plays, the basketball team becoming three-time victors of the Gridley Tournament, and the academic honors won by our students are indications of our incomparable greatness. Excellent B.O.C. and student body communication made possible some of the other exciting activities such as Hello day, the rally committee-faculty basketball game, and casual day — to name only a few. During the Spring term of 1962 the incessant echoes of no school spirit’’ were not heard at Berkeley High. What could be more indicative of school spirit than the student expression of opinion through the Daily Jacket and support of our athletic teams, win or lose? I would like to thank Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Curtice, Mr. Nealson, Mr. Okerstrom, Mr. Lutt, Mr. Buettner, and a host of others for their priceless aid and advice. As I leave Berkeley High School I will take with me a part of these people, who, through their millions of duties each day still gave of their precious time to help me over the rough spots” and encouraged me when I needed it the most. It is with reluctance that we the members of the Board of Control leave our seats around the table of school govern- ment, but with us we take the unforgettable memories of the discussions, the debates, the ups and downs, and the satisfaction of a job well done. For some of us these will be the last memories of Berkeley High. But others of us eagerly await the next opportunity for service to Berkeley High. My job as student body president has been an invaluable experience — an education in itself. In many ways you have made me extremely proud to represent you. I thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to be your leader. 8
