PETERSMEYER c MR. WENNERBU RG . DR NICHOLS becretary, Board of Education DR. MAISEL MRS. SIBLEY MR. AVAKIAN Membership on a Board of Education is considered by some profound observers of the American scene to be the most important service a citizen may render his community. Certainly few citizens have greater influence on the country’s future, since the education of a people in great measure determines the quality of its government and society. The Board of Education, composed of citizens and elected by citizens, has been a unique development of American education. The growth and strength of free public education have accompanied this development. The very significant number of recent improvements in the quality of education in Berkeley in large measure is a reflection of the interest, perception, insights and devotion of its Board of Education. This quality ultimately is as high as the Board determines it should be. The present Board has set an example for most American communities in its devotion Principal s Message REF CAL 373 B455o SPRING 1 962 In my opinion, Berkeley High presents one of the most interesting and challenging situations in which it has been my pleasure to work with young people. If someone should ask me what I consider to be Berkeley High’s major problem, I would probably say it is the impression given to the public by a very small percentage of our students. Ironically, the students to whom I refer will most likely not read this message. The large segment of the public which is not aware of all of the outstanding accomplish- ments of the large majority of our students, get its impression from what it sees on the surface, or from the negative happenings that get much publicity in print, and via exaggerated tales. To those of you who are carrying out your responsibilities, individually and collectively, thereby making Berkeley High School a better place in which students may learn to live and grow up together, go my sincere congratulations and appreciation. Assuming these responsibilities now affords you the training that will enable you to function effectively in the community of your future. Your Principal, 4 ! nr. 9 MARGIE LEHTIN I believe that you, the students, are the theme of this Pod. The idea of every page, the foundation that makes this book possible, successful, and worthwhile. This theme is constantly changing, as its subjects constantly change their opinions of people, of ideas, of life. There will always be this foundation of individuals moving into life step by step, anxious to dis- cover what that next step will reveal. At Berkeley High the steps toward the future have been a fairly clear path for you to follow. After graduation when you accept your diploma, these steps will be more difficult to follow, they may be hidden or out of reach. I hope each of you will find happiness and satisfaction with each step you take. It is hard for you to realize the many preparations and frustrations that compose this yearbook. The Pod Staff and especially Miss Smith deserve your sincere thanks and appreciation. MARGIE LEHTIN Editor I N T R 0 D U C T 1 5 O 5 Good-bye to a Friend It is with deep sorrow and sincere regret that I sit down to write this notice of the death of a dear, good friend of mine, personally, and also of almost everyone, Willis (Whitey) Nealson, vice-principal and director of student activities at Berkeley High School. Whitey was one of those people who devoted his life to the education of our youth. He enjoyed his work and was always willing to support and encourage any worthwhile student activity. His happy-go-lucky manner, his understanding, assistance, smile, and encouragement will be greatly missed by a great many of our students and faculty. I know that I, personally, will miss his company and companionship very much. He will be thought of and missed whenever a student activity is being performed. There were very few, if any, such events at which Whitey was not functioning in some capacity. He had been with Berkeley schools over 30 years, serving as a P.E. teacher and counselor at Garfield, and at Berkeley High he served in the capacity of counselor, dean of boys, vice-principal, and as principal of summer school. He had a long, successful career with the Berkeley schools. During World War II he served as gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy, with the rank of lieutenant. May you go on enjoying yourself wherever you may now be, doing as you did in fife. Good-bye and God bless you. We will all miss you. Sincerely, a Robert A. Rajander President-Elect, B.T.A. 6 MR. WILLIS (Whitey) NEALSON In Memoriam EDYTHE M. WEICHSELBAUM Teacher at Berkeley High School January 1930 - April 1962 Steady in purpose, devoted to duty, faith- ful to friends — a truly fine and respected teacher who will be long remembered by a host of students who knew her well. I 1 FRANCISCO NEWMAN ASBHS President CHARLES HARRIS Vice-President LINDA SCHACHT Secretary BRUCE VERMUELEN Treasurer The President’s Message This passing term saw many things besides the traditional return of Spring. The highly representative and colorful Board of Control naturally made a few mistakes, and differed on issues, but without their sacrifices, time, and ideas, the Spring term could not have been a success. One need not look into the past in search of Berkeley High’s excellence. The drama department’s presentation of two spectacular plays, the basketball team becoming three-time victors of the Gridley Tournament, and the academic honors won by our students are indications of our incomparable greatness. Excellent B.O.C. and student body communication made possible some of the other exciting activities such as Hello day, the rally committee-faculty basketball game, and casual day — to name only a few. During the Spring term of 1962 the incessant echoes of no school spirit’’ were not heard at Berkeley High. What could be more indicative of school spirit than the student expression of opinion through the Daily Jacket and support of our athletic teams, win or lose? I would like to thank Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Curtice, Mr. Nealson, Mr. Okerstrom, Mr. Lutt, Mr. Buettner, and a host of others for their priceless aid and advice. As I leave Berkeley High School I will take with me a part of these people, who, through their millions of duties each day still gave of their precious time to help me over the rough spots” and encouraged me when I needed it the most. It is with reluctance that we the members of the Board of Control leave our seats around the table of school govern- ment, but with us we take the unforgettable memories of the discussions, the debates, the ups and downs, and the satisfaction of a job well done. For some of us these will be the last memories of Berkeley High. But others of us eagerly await the next opportunity for service to Berkeley High. My job as student body president has been an invaluable experience — an education in itself. In many ways you have made me extremely proud to represent you. I thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to be your leader. 8 Board of Control JOE MUELLER H - 1 2 President BILL NELSON L-12 President RICHARD HUGHES H-l I President JOHN SCHWEIZER L-l I President ALAN POOLE H- 10 President BUCK REESOR L-10 President JAMES KENT Head Yell Leader THOMAS JOCHUMS Block B President JENNIFER WATKINS Honor Society President JOCELYN KINGDON Jacket Editor TIM McCAUGHEY D.M.S. I have long awaited the time when I would be graduating, but now I hate to leave. I’ve made so many friends as your G.A. President. Our past Spring semester has been filled with activ- ities, and fun for all. We started the semester with the traditional G.A. Welcome, for students new to Berke- ley High. Selling G.A. lollipops again proved to be a great success for our treasury. The biggest event of the year was the G.A. Dance, Let’s Twist Again,” which starred the popular Night- caps and featured a Twist contest. Jam on all you twisters! The G.A. Fashion Show finished off the se- mester with a bang. I would like to thank the G.A. representatives, Mrs. Ulry and the Senior Friends, Mrs. Schwimley, and most of all the faithful G.A. officers, Patty, Suzy, Sandi, and Catherine. May all you girls find continued happiness, and God be with each of you. SANDI STEVENS Secreta ry MRS. ULRY Sponsor SUZY PIERCE Treasurer 10 CATHERINE JOSI Social Secretary 12th Grade G.A. Council 11th Grade G.A. Council 10th Grade G.A. Council Rally Committee ROBERT LEWIS Chairman With the signing of Pods and the rapid approach of Graduation Exercises this year’s Rally Committee will dissolve and hand over its duties to a new group of Seniors. For each of us membership in the Rally Committee has been an enjoyable culmination of three active years at B.H.S. By following in the tradition of past committees, which is to be of service to the school at any time and in any way possible, we have tried to repay, if only in part, a debt built up over six wonderful but fleeting semesters. The qualities of spirit and leadership within each member of the committee was evidenced by their active and successful participation in school activities. I would like to thank my assistants Tom Cooper, Dick McFarland, Charles McNear, Gene Nakamura, and Tom Petersmeyer for their invaluable help. I would also like to thank Mr. Nealson, who had a wonderful knack of knowing the right thing to do at the right time. This semester could not have been a success without his timely and unselfish assistance. Congratulations are also in order for every committee member. Your excellent work this semester has made each of you a credit to the school, and has provided even another reason for those who remain behind to be proud of their school. Through proctoring, helping teachers and substitutes, by welcoming new students and visitors, by ushering and working in the lobby we have furthered our goal, Friendship and Service.” But our efforts have gone into other areas, too. We served the G.A. in the lollipop sale and dance, while we have tried to reinstitute the Rally-Senior Friend changeabout and sponsor a slave sale. The responsibilities of a Senior Friend are many. But it offers privileges and opportunities to serve and participate in varied activities. Such a large group as this semester’s Senior Friends could only have run smoothly through the cooperation and imagination of all the girls. Sharing the burden has made my work easier. Honor Society Message The Honor Society has worked closely with C.S.F. to make this an active and profitable Spring term, with increased H.S.- C.S.F. participation in school life. The H.S. tutoring program has been enlarged to include another department, and to enable more people to participate in it. With H.S. sponsorship, a speed-reading program has been introduced. The series of debates on controversial subjects has been continued on a larger scale. In addition to the traditional Spring outing, a movie outing has been included in this semes- ter s activities. A concession and a decal sale have enabled Honor Society to increases the size of its scholarships. The other H.S. officers and the sponsors have certainly been instrumental in making this semester a success. I am grateful to them, and to all the H.S. members for allowing me to share in this experience. JENNIFER WATKINS DENISE HENDERSON Board Member JON HOLLANDER C.S.F. Chapter of the California Scholarship Federation continued its tradition of activity and service for its members and for the school. This was made possible by an enthusiastic membership. The C.S.F. had a large program of serious activities this term. Several speakers were recruited by the C.S.F. to speak on various controversial issues. An open discussion with B.H.S. department heads proved to be very informative. The treasury was boosted by a joint concession with the H.S., and the C.S.F. hopes to have a regular scholarship fund soon. Speaker’s Bureau, made up of the best of our Public Speaking students, has played an important part as a liaison between the students and organizations and activities such as The King and I,” POD sales, Student Body Card sales, and school and community projects. The Speaker’s Bureau is the finishing touch in keeping the students at B.H.S. well informed. We hope that next year more organizations at Berkeley High use the services of Speaker’s Bureau, as we are always willing to help them out. TIM McCAUGHEY Bruce Cowee Bill Drescher Tom Jochums Tim McCaughey Norm Delwiche Dick McFarland H I L I T E S Hi-Lites, Berkeley High’s radio program, has been working hard all this semester put- ting out its 15-minute show over KRE 1400. Even though the picture doesn t show it, the staff puts in about five hours of hard work every week trying to represent B.H.S. as it really is. Hi Lites tries to relate the news of the week, interspersed with humor and music. It is just another factor in B.H.S. s superior national rating as a school. THE HI-LITES STAFF x IN MEMORI AM JEFF DARDEN July 19 1961 Jeff Darden was one of the most outstanding football players ever to attend Berkeley High School, Jeff died July 19, 1961. His death was felt by all who knew him. His warmth and understanding touched us deeply. There are memories that grow dim and fade as the years pass, but Jeff’s pleasing personality and warm friendliness can never fade or be forgotten. Personality, warmth, friendliness, and athletic abilities, these were the treasures possessed by Jeff Darden. JOEL GILDERSLEEVE July 29 1960 Joel Gildersleeve was a well-rounded boy. He was courageous, athletic, friendly, and above all interested in the problems and welfare of others. His death on July 29, 1960, was a great shock to all of us. It was an even greater blow to those of us who participated in athletics both with him and against him. It’s a tragic thing to lose someone so dear to you, and we’re sure this feeling was shared by all who knew him. Courageous, friendly, athletic, and understanding of others, this was Joel C. Gildersleeve. H-12 CLASS -SPRING ’62 20 JOE MUELLER President JIM PRICCO Vice-President BONNIE ELLISON Secretary KENT MATSUMOTO Treasurer MARTHA GERACI Social Secretary H-12 President’s Message How does one go about recalling all of the wonderful memories of the three happiest years of our young lives? Alas, but the time slipped by unnoticed, and much too swiftly. Our insecure, yet eventful Sophomore year, and our hard-working, yet enjoyable Junior year seem like just yesterday. All too soon our Senior year draws to a close and graduation is upon us. We now find ourselves filled with mixed emotions; glad to have accumulated a wide field of knowledge and eager to receive our diplomas, but sad to be leaving behind us the many friends and associates we have come to cherish. Of the three years at Berkeley High School, our Senior year has been the most memor- able. Our Senior activities: ditch day, the Senior Ball, the all-nite party following gradu- ation ceremonies, and several other meaningful events which were all made possible through hard-working but enjoyable fund-raising projects, proved highly successful! Far more important than these activities though, are the many friendships we have established during our stay at Berkeley High. Most of these, we hope, will last a lifetime. For these friendships I am grateful to Berkeley High School, and you, my classmates. In closing, I wish to extend my appreciation to the faculty, headed by Mr. Emery Curtice, Mr. Schrump, our class sponsor, my fellow officers, Jim, Bonnie, Kent and Marti, and most importantly to you, the graduating class of 1962, who honored me with this office, and who made this the successful year of our high school careers. In the three years we have spent at Berkeley High we have managed to get an education while being active in the various school functions. Of these three years we have many memories. Entering Berkeley High in the Fall of 1959, our class of 879 students was the largest in the history of the school. Becoming acquainted with our new school we readily took part in activities. Although we were not organized in time to participate in the Soph Hop, our concessions on the slope, at football games, and at Fun Nite were very successful. In our Junior year the big dance was the Junior Prom, Noel.” We were also represented very well in the Varieties, Hello There.” Through our concessions and Fun Nite booth we increased our treasury. Finally came the long-awaited Senior year. As L-12’s we held a car wash and our concession was ice cream cones. Now came our last semester and we were high seniors. Members of our class tried out for the Senior Play, became Rally Boys and Senior Friends, and joined Senior Committees. The Senior Play was Death Takes A Holiday,” a very dramatic and moving play, well performed by a cast of about 3 0 high seniors. The success of the Senior Play, a car wash, and the sale of slush insured the class of a Ditch Day which was held in Searsville on May 2 5. The night of June 1 will be remembered by all. This was the night of our Senior Ball, held at Pauley Ballroom. This brings us to June 1 5, 1962, the day we graduated from Berkeley High School. The graduating class of some 720 students was outstanding in all fields: dramatics, scholarship, and athletics. In scholar- ship this class rated high with 6 5 members of Honor Society, 40 of C.S.F., 13 Special Privilege Seal- bearers, and 10 National Merit Finalists. In sports we both contributed with winning teams and produced individual stars. It seems like only a short while ago we entered Berkeley High, but now we are leaving Berkeley High School. We will leave, but we will bring fond remembrances along with us. Remembrances of the friend- ships we have made, knowledge we have been taught, and experiences we have gained. We will leave and many of our three years at Berkeley High School will always remain with us. This being both an honor and a reward, has spurred the members to a lot of hard work and practicing. The Band will have the enjoyment of playing a series of concerts for one of the Fair’s largest audiences on Memorial Day. We are now working on many spectacular fund-raising projects including a car wash, pancake breakfast, a gala Red and Gold ball to be held at the Claremont, and a Spring Concert, to earn the costs of our trip to Seattle. I would really like to thank the members of the Band Staff, Mr. Lutt, the D.M.S. Council and the Key Club, who have given the Band so much help and support in planning our trip. This semester will be a lasting memory for all those who are able to be a part of the Berkeley High School Band. EARLE ATKINSON Concert Band EARLE ATKINSON Pep Band JON KIP BOB LEWIS Dance Band The Dance Band has had a very busy term, playing for assemblies, dances, junior high concerts and other musical events. The Band, under the able leadership of Jon Kip, was judged the top band at the Northern California Dance Band Tournament at Riordan High School in San Francisco. This is the second time the Band has won the event in the past three years. The director of the Monterey Jazz Festival has invited the Band to the opening concert at Monterey as guests of the festival. The Band has shown a great amount of spirit and high morale and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the finest Dance Bands at Berkeley High School. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Varsity Basketball team had a very successful season this year. Their over-all record was 19-6. They compiled a 12-4 record during league play to finish second in the A.C.A.L. The team contained the league’s top scorer and All-A.C.A.L. forward Joe Thompson. In the Gridley Tourna- ment, Berkeley outclassed such high- ly rated teams as Orland and Harry Ells to win the championship. Thompson was named the most val- uable player of the tourney, and Pat Blew was selected to the all-tourna- ment team. PRESEASON 56 Castlemont 29 55 Miramonte 34 40 . BASKETBALL “B” BASKETBALL The 1961-1962 B” Basket- ball team had a good 17-2 rec- ord and tied for the A.C.A.L. league championship. Captains Danny Garcia and Paul Wilcox along with Steve Stebbins and Rick Machek traded high-point honors in game after game. This led to well-balanced scoring and a high degree of respect for each other’s ability. This entire squad was a good hard-working group, which is needed for a winning team. Berkeley students can be proud of this club, and I’m sure that they were proud to represent you. MR. This year’s Varsity Baseball team with numerous returning lettermen, completed a very successful season in 1962. With Mike Barekman, Gene Nakamura and John Rinset doing most of the pitching, the squad had an adequate staff. Backing up the pitching for Coach George Wilson was Tom Cooper, Jim McCray, Gary Bovich, Tom Petersmeyer, Joe Mueller, Bob Payne, Gary Wilson, and Scott Flegal. These players rounded out the starting line-up most of the year. A well-rounded team and the drive to win made this year’s baseball team a success. The 1962 Varsity Track team, coached by Rich Hacker, was very much like the State Championship team of 19 5 7. Wilburn f r P.E.OEPT Williams and Rufus Chambers are two fine runners who have both added depth and strength to the squad. GYMNASTICS The 1962 Gymnastic team continually displayed a great deal of en- thusiasm, spirit, and desire to be champions. The opportunity to work with boys of this caliber has provided a great deal of pleasure for me. As so often is the case at Berkeley High School, much of the credit for an athletic team’s success rests with individuals not directly associated with Berkeley High. The gymnastics team this year is no exception. Much of the credit for this year’s success should rightfully go to Mr. Ernest Marinoni of the Berkeley Y.M.C.A. The members of the team and myself express our deepest thanks for his work and devotion to the sport of gymnastics. Club To the faculty and students of Berkeley High: A famous author once said that, If men and women are to understand each other, to enter into each other’s nature with mutual sympathy, and to become capable of genuine comradeship, the foundation must be laid in youth.” How aptly this quotation stresses the responsibility of our youth in world relations to come, and how closely it penetrates the meaning of the A.F.S. goal. For, through its program of foreign exchange students, the A.F.S. organiza- tion around the world has attempted to create a bond of universal understand- ing. Our A.F.S. program this year will attempt to do no less than in the past. Now that the A.F.S. candidates have been chosen, we will proceed to collect as much aid for them as is possible. The A.F.S. chapter tea, the concession this spring, and other fund raising will help to further the A.F.S. needs. This year, Monika and Emilio have tried to give our Berkeley community an idea of the customs, and hopes of their countries. Next year our candidates will be trying to do their part. Perhaps this mutual cooperation between peoples of different countnes .s the most important A.F.S. goal. e wide and whole-hearted participation of our A.F.S. members this semester has led me to believe so. In looking back at A.F.S. accomplishments, one must also look forward, and it may surely be seen that m this time of sha y tions with foreign countries, it is more necessary than ever to promote world understanding by such programs. Thus I would like to express my appreciation for having the honor of being A.F.S. president, and also my hope that today ' s youth will continue to express its desire for world peace by participation in organizations such as Cindy Postler the American Field Service. Sincerely, CINDI POSTLER A.F.S. President 88 Exchange Students’ Messages Emilio Barionuevo This is my last semester at Berkeley High. I’ll graduate and after it the very sad farewell. I say farewell but in fact, only my body will leave Berkeley High because my friends, teachers and all the people who have been connected with me and have made my staying here so delightful, will remain in my mind for- ever and I’ll remember the experience as one of the highlights of my life. The year I have spent in Berkeley High has broadened my mind, has given me more experience for my future life and has made me realize how wonderful is living surrounded by a mutual understanding with people of different races, languages, brackgrounds, cultures and religious feelings. I’m really grateful to you for giving me such a wonderful opportunity. Yours Sincerely, Monika Sachse Looking back on this year I must say that this has been the busiest and most rewarding one I could have possibly had. In many respects my daily life changed from what I was used to. After only a short time I found myself thinking in English, and sometimes had difficulty remembering my own German language. These things I will miss: having sisters, brothers, and a dog of my own; the beautiful unspoiled country close to Berkeley; skiing, horseback riding; the Thanksgiving turkey, and Santa Claus coming through the chimney . . . and last, but not least, going to B.H.S. It was quite a contrast to the small high school I attended in Berlin with only four hundred students. The German school is much stricter with emphasis entirely on academic subjects. Wearing lipstick and tennis shoes to school would be verboten.” Here I have learned to appreciate the variety of subjects, a closer contact with the teachers, a better school spirit, and social life. So I would like to thank all of you for letting me participate in your daily life. In this way I gained a wonderful and unforgettable remembrance. Already, a large degree of unification at Berkeley High School has replaced older Junior High loyalties. Our concessions, Soph Hop” and other projects have been successful in building up our treas- ury. Altogether there is a promise of bigger and better things to come. We are building up traditions and associations that will support us throughout our High School careers. It might be said that our small class has a disproportionately large foot in the door. For this success our warm thanks are due to Mr. Nealson, Mr. Van Zomeren and our other sponsors, members of the B.O.C., and our own class council. I would like to express my sincere thanks to our class for a rewarding and stimulating experience as president. I hope that we will give our next president as fine support as has been given me. Thanks again, BUCK RESSOR L- 1 0 President POP dbi il J n i flua At. ft mm p lV, HIGH TEN CLASS President ALAN POOLE Vice-President STAN NAKAHARA Secretary JANE ROBERTSON Treasurer LINDA NOLASCO Social Secretary SANDY REIDENBACH as i took office this semester I was somewhat aware of the responsibility facing me as your class president. However, I had no idea of the support I would receive, both from conscientious faculty members and an en- thusiastic class. There was a genuine desire to be of help and it was deeply appreciated. I made it my policy to stay close to the class mem- bership to maintain a better communication. The response was truly gratifying. It was the spirit of a large number of students that made our class projects as successful as they were. They gave that intangible something” that made both the Soph Hop” and the concession true class activities. Of course, certain faculty members also made them authorized class activities. I would like to thank them for their patient behind-the-scenes work. As we enter our Junior year we can, without doubt, say that we have done well and that we will continue our achievements in the future, becoming an ever more integral unit of school life. It has been an honor to serve such a fine group. I have really enjoyed serving my class this semester, and I would like to wish each and every one of my classmates the best of luck throughout the remaining three semesters at B.H.S. I will always remember this semester as one of my most enriching experiences. The assistance that I received from the class council, class officers, and Mr. McNeil, our sponsor, was certainly tremendous. Without this indispensable cooperation, successes such as the Junior Prom, and the French bread concession would have been totally impossible. Thank you all so much for allowing me to have this experience! Our successful development as a class is evident through the spirit shown in such activ- ities as our car wash, Junior Prom, and Slope concession, but equally important is the growth we have experienced as individuals. Our life tomorrow depends on what ideals we form today, and I know Berkeley High has, and in our senior year will continue, to mold us into more conscientious, faithful citizens. Thanks to Mr. Dierauf and Miss Meyers, our class sponsors, and to you, the members of the class of 1963 for having given me the opportunity to serve you. Our class has shown a much greater unity this semester than in previous semesters. It has shown a genuine interest in its affairs and has participated actively in class functions. Ditch Day w r as a success, and we earned much-needed money with a cotton candy sale and a car wash. We now look forward to an active and successful year as high seniors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the class for giving me the chance to serve it and for the cooperation which it has exhibited.
