 Dear reader: In the 1971 Scarab we've tried to (1) create a definite mood on each two-page spread, (2) show the presence of interesting designs and forms—both natural and man-made—in our school and community, (3) present photographs and layouts that are artistically pleasing, (4) record the unique events of the 1970-71 school year. Art is the difference between SEEING. and just identifying. Only people can see the shape of a puddle and the reflections it catches, the hard angles of steel girders against the sky, the light-and-dark of shadows on a stairway, the rhythm of whirling wheels at rush hour. This is art? Almost. This is man shifting gears from the pace of everyday rush for a long look, seeing the pattern, the rhythm of rustling leaves or stark winter branches, of water dripping, of the slinking movement of a cat: This is man taking a long look at the things he needs, at the world rushing by, at war, at hate, at love.
