The 1969-1970 edition of the Benton Ranger basketball team had a very successful season. With four juniors and one sophomore in the Starting line-up, Coach Herrin's team placed second in the conference, one game behind the Mt. Vernon Rams. The basketball season started in a rough way for the Rangers. Going into the Cen- tralia Tournament, the Rangers carried a 2--3 record. The tournament held no sur- prises for the Rangers. They were defeated by New Trier in the first game. After beat- ing Salem in the second game, the Rangers were the victims of a strong Peoria Spauld- ing team that eliminated the Rangers from the tournament. The Rangers continued with their sporadic play until the Quad City Tournament. After losing to Fairfield in the first game of the tournament the Rangers went on to beat McLeansboro and Carmi. After the loss to Fairfield, the Rangers managed 10 wins out of their next 11 games. The Rangers ended their regular season with a 15--9 record, Starting the Regional Tournament, the Rangers were underdogs to West Frankfort, who had defeated the Rangers twice during the regular season. After disposing of Chris- topher and Johnston City, the Rangers were matched against West Frankfort for the championship, and the rightto advance to the Sectional Tournament at Harrisburg. In a hard fought game the Rangers came out as victors over the Redbirds and advanced to the Sectional Tournament. After disposing of Pope County their first Sectional foe, the Rangers advanced to the finals against Mt. Vernon. Following a long seasons battle, the Rangers finally fell to the Rams 70--63. This ended the season with a 19--10 record.
