CLASS HISTORY Twelve short years ago a band of seventy-nine inexperienced mountain climbers gathered together to climb a large peak. Although not knowing how to climb as yet, we had heard of others who had climbed the peak and received great rewards for it, so we were determined to complete our climb. The first year we established footholds and began our upward surge. The following teachers helped us secure our foot¬ holds Mrs. Lela Benton, Mrs. Lydia Griffin, Miss Helen Schoekner, Miss Hawthorne, Mrs. Sam Foster, Mrs. James Pressley, Mrs. Hinson, Miss Pat Benton, Miss Annie Williams, Miss Margaret Love, Mrs. Nell Correll, Mrs. Oscar Broome, Mrs. Lane Teeter, and Miss Christine Whitley. We were at a point where we could see the white peak in the not too far off future, still we knew it would take four more years of hard work to reach the top. Through the years as the trails had become narrower and the mountain steeper some of our troop dropped behind while still others had discontinued the climb entirely. Out of the group of seventy-nine only forty-four now remained. With the total of forty-four we started our ninth year climb with Mrs. Grace W. Craig as our leader. She taught us many new and exciting things about the peak. We elected as our class officers this year: Louise Helms, President; Jimmy Helms Vice President; Bobby Pope, Secretary; and Max Eury, Treasurer. We also elected Jackie Waters and Gene Helms as Student Council Representatives. In the Tenth year of our climb with MrVEverette Hatley serving as sponsor we saw many more exciting things: We elected as class leaders: Jimmy Helms, President: Bruce Medlin, Vice President; J. L. Poplin, Secretary; and Nadine Holshouser, Treasurer. We elected as Student Council Representatives Claudene Ferguson and Gene Helms. This year the following members of our class were admitted to the Beta Club. Bruce Medlin, Johnnie Jean Helms, Louise Helms, Nadine Holshouser, and Anne Wiley. With Miss Lathan as leader in the eleventh year, we climbed still higher. This year we elected as class officers: Max Eury, President; Hugh Clarke Hargette, Vice President; Bruce Medlin, Secretary; and Claudene Ferguson, Ireasurer. This year saw the Beta Club accept two more members of our class, Marcine Griffin and Jackie Waters. Gene Helms was named Vice President of the Student Council, Jackie Waters and Steve Ferguson served as representatives. This year we staged a banquet for a group of climbers who were nearing the top of the peak. We were fortunate in having as guest speaker at this banquet Mr. N. K. Dickerson, Sr., who has climbed many, many peaks during his life. Then comes the final year of the club. The group is now cut to thirty-two determined climbers. Miss Lathan again acts as sponsor. We have for class officers. Clayton Pressley, President; Anne Wiley, Vice President; Marcine Griffin, Secretary: and Eugene Trull, Treasurer. Max Eury is President of the Student Council. Jackie Waters and Jimmy Helnv are Student Council Representatives. We are glad to welcome to our class Gene Morris from Asheville. Now at the end of our climb the thirty-three who have faced hardships and the wonderful times want to thank our leaders for securing our footholds and mak g it possible that we could reach the peak. Without the assistance of our most capable leaders we could never have reached the top. We know that this is only one great peak of many of life which we must climb but with the superior leadership which we have been rendered 1 feel sure that an 5 one of us can climb any peak he chooses. CLASS POEM Where is this place of high esteem, This place we call success; Where fondest dreams are realized, And troubles come to rest. We cannot see this haven clear, Our vision is too weak: But let us try to picture it, As on a distant mountain peak. Each peak will represent a goal, A chosen way of life; A challenge to the hardy souls, Who welcome work and strife. So keep in mind the final goal Is worth the work and time; So join the band of seekers bold, And pick your peak and climb. EARL KIKER Class Poet EARL KIKER GENE MORRIS, Senior, from Weaverville, North Carolina, entered Benton Heights High School on December 2, 19S2. 17
