The Niles Vikings' invasion of Filstrup Field October 25th was a desolate occasion. Early in the first quarter a Viking back broke through to pay dirt for the game's only tally. The Harbor defense stiffened from then on, but the offense ran into a brick wall as the final score was Niles-6, B.H.-O. Six hundred Benton Harbor rooters cheered the team on at Muskegon Heights, having participated in the an- nual train trip which is the highlight of the football sea- son. On the first play from scrimmage, speedy Osie McCarty of Heights broke away for a 78-yard touch- down run. Again early in the second quarter, McCarty scored, this time as a pass play. After these two costly escapades the Tigers controlled McCarty as though they had a custom-made straight-iacket and decidedly out- played Heights the entire second half. The Tigers made several drives into Heights' territory in the second half, but were denied a touchdown for the 5th straight game. The contest with Holland, played in winds so strong that punts went backwards, was won by our Harbor eleven, 7-6, ending a 5 game touchdown and P.A.T. famine. The TD came on a short pass to Chet Walker and Joe Rodgers ran the extra point. Inch deep mud on the field greatly hampered running, while the wind, with gusts of 50 M.P.H., was not exactly helpful as far as the aerial game was concerned. "A young gentleman about to be grounded." "Almost made it, the next play we did." ln the first quarter of the Grand Rapids Union game Benton Harbor launched a relentless 80-yard TD march, climaxed by a 37-yard Colemen-to-Yarbrough pass. Early in the fourth quarter, trailing 13-6, our Tigers drove from their own 35-yard stripe to the Union l-foot line, from where Duane Mitchell plunged over, only to have the touchdown nullified by a penalty. Fullback Duane Mitchell played his best game in his three year varsity career, plowing through the Union line for a total of 90 yards. Three long runs won the game for Union, 20-6. Despite the fact that The Benton Harbor gridiron squad suffered its worst season in seven years, They gave some very commendable performances, as The state's Top Teams can testify. The Tigers' star soared like a premature Sputnik when They crashed Chicago Well's goal line six Times in The opening game to Win 36-6. Harbor was rated tenth in The state as a result of this convincing victory. "No hole too small . . . " B.H. vs. Wells. taste of troubles to come. The "Bucs" softened the Tigers' roar to the tune of 20-O. The Orange and Black robed squad's offense, the least of their worries in the first game, could never get off the ground against Grand Haven. Influenza U-Xsian typej was the decided victor in the South Bend St. Joseph game, forcing a cancellation. In the next game against the Muskegon Big Reds, Benton Harbor was literally "locked out" of the victors' circle. In the first period of play, Muskegon sophomore Terry Locke broke away for two touchdown romps. AI- though the Tigers' defense stiffened during the remain- ing minutes of the game, the damage was done. The final score was T2-O. October eighteenth's Tilt with Kalamazoo was "one for the books." Until the fourth quarter The game had been a hard fought defensive battle with each team making two successful goal line stands. Early in the fourth quarter the Maroon Giants' quarterback punted from his own end zone, stepping out of the end zone as he did so, giving Benton Harbor 2 points. Leo Hall, Bill Umphrey, and Jerry Biggart were the backbones of the Tiger defense that held Kazoo to a minus nine yards rushing while Jim Turner accounted for half the Bengals' yardage.
