The orchestra is one of the most versatile organizations in our high school. The
players must be able to adapt their playing to styles of music which range from
the gay, lilting melodies of a Broadway musical to Shubert's "Unfinished" Symphony.
The orchestra performs many times during the school year. These performances
include the annual concert held in March, and the district band and orchestra con-
test. Besides this, a smaller theater orchestra is required to play for the senior class
play, the all-school play, baccalaureate, class night, and to furnish an instrumental
background for the operetta.
In addition to this, string ensembles play for many dinners and other social
gatherings throughout the year.
On January 31st, the Band and Orchestra put on its annual "Carnival Night." On
the next day, members traveled to Kalamazoo to compete in the district solo and
ensemble contest where many received high honors for their efforts.
"Prelude to the Opera 'Lorelei"' by Bruch, "The Pearl Fishers" by Bizet and
"Overture to the Ballet 'Don Juan' " by vonGluclc are the maior works performed
by the orchestra this year.
