With the return of seven lettermen and the addition of six newcomers to varsity rating, Coach Farnum and our Tigers came up with another successful year by winning twelve of their sixteen games. Nine of these were played in the new, spacious, and "splinte1'less" Colfax Coliseum, as the last game of the season with Muskegeon Heights, brought a capacity crowd and an all- time attend-ance record of 3,200. With J. Barchett, J. Culverhouse, D. Dunbar, D. Marler, C. Peapples, C. Walker, and S. Watson being the seven returning lettermen and A. Belski, 1. Biggert, R. Lange, B. Rodgers, B. Whitman, and M. Yarborough, as the "rookies," our Tigers made their debut by defeating the Morton Governors by a score of 70 to 58 with 6 ft. 5 in. Chet Walker taking scoring honors with 28 points, and Sam Watsoncoming up second with 21 points. The second game proved easier as Benton Harbor "wrote the record book" by slaughtering Grand Haven by a score of 78 to 37--both totals being the respective high and low for the season. ,X as f , -.-Sf' A loose ball belongs to anyone, which results in Dunbar's getting it. 93 enough to win. GEORGE PEAPPLES DUANE DUNBAR MICKY YARBROUCH C uard Guard Forward After knocking off a not-too-strong Chicago Tuley team 74 to 37, our Tigers ran up against their rival from Kalamazoo, the Maroon Giants, and were beaten 65 to 44 as a full court press took us apart at the seams. Holland then tried to make it two in a row, but failed as Chet Walker led the way .to an 83 to 57 exhibition in which he scored 40 points setting a new school record for individual points. Continuing on their winning ways, the Tigers trounced over the Big Reds from Muskegon 83 to 47 with individual honors, this time going to Sam Watson whose 27 points proved to be the highest total in his career. Smarting from their first loss, Grand Haven came back for revenge and almost got it as Chet Walker came down with the mumps and was unable to play. Nevertheless, the score ended up in our favor, 60 to 58, as Don Marler, with only two seconds left to play, sank a long one to put us ahead. ,lim Culverhouse did a good job of substituting for Walker and started in the next two games in his absence. Losing to South Bend Washington in a thrilling overtime 69 to 67 and heating Niles 58 to 42 brought us up against our toughest opposition of the season with Burton, McCarty, and company from Muskegon Heights scoring 67 to 44. feurge get a lay-up for two points. Niles was behind all the way, as wc Two points we didnt gd see Micky clearing the boards. 94
