With these changes the Tigers made their 1956 debut in a 44 to 0 win over Chicago Wells. While running up the biggest score in 13 years and holding their opponents to a negligible total of yards gained, the Tigers demonstrated their offensive and defensive punches against a very weak and inexperienced team. Stiller competition proved fatal as Grand Haven outscored us 12 to 6 while Don Marler played one of his best games by gaining 138 of the 163 total yards gained. Again against tougher opposition, the Tigers lost two more to Morton Hammond, where we won statistically, yet lost on the score-boards, and Muskegon where the concensus of opinion was that the Tigers played Cm-t him. buys! Mr. Sickles resigned as athletic director, Mr. Rogers stepped out of his role as head coach and into the one vacated by Mr. Sickles, with Mr. Hynd taking over as head coach, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Appledorn moved up as assistants. Witli the coaching staff completed, attention was turned to the team. J. Barchett, O. Edwards, T. Garland, D. Kesler, D. Marler, J. Rogers, B. Rodgers, B. Swanson, and S. Watsoii were the returning leftermen who formed the nucleus of the team. At the beginning of the season, Coach Hynd tried Sam WHISOII, who was second in speed probably only to Don Marler, at fullback, but found that his talents were more clearly needed in the line, so Big Sam was switched to 47 L GO- man. Two straight wins over Kalamazoo 19 to 6 and Niles 9 to O boosted the record to 3 and 3, and a loss to Muskegon Heights and a win over Holland gave us a 4 and 4 total forthe season. D. Marler, J. Rogers, and S. Watson all received All-State ratings, while J. Barchett received Mr. Hynd,s appraisal as one of the best linebackers the Tigers have had in the last ten years.
