The members must be able to adapt their playing to many dif- ferent styles of music which range from the gay, lilting melodies of a Broad- way musical to a Beethoven symphony. The orchestra performs many times during the school year. These per- formances include a Christmas program put on for the student body, the annual concert held in March, and the district band and orchestra contest. Besides this, a smaller theater orchestra is required to play for the senior class play, the all-school play, baccalaureate, class night, and to furnish an instrumental background for the operetta. In addition to this, a string ensemble composed of two violins, a viola, cello, bass viol, and piano, play for many dinners and other social gatherings throughout the year. In early February, members of the orchestra traveled to Kalamazoo to compete in the district solo and ensemble contest where many received high honors for their efforts. "Symphonic Miniature," by Bakaleinikoffg "Three Brothers Overture," by Cimarosag and "Sonata Da Chiesa," by Corelli, are the major works being performed by the orchestra this year. Each year, the orchestra improves greatly in musical ability, and we are all sure that in a few years, under the capable direction of Mr. Etling, our orchestra will be known as one of the best in the state. 78
