Rhodes. who supplied the remaining power in the offensive punch, had fifteen hits
in 44 times at bat for a batting average of 341.
Sam Watson was the big gun on the pitching staff and ended up with a record of
five wins and three losses. Sam's record is actually better than it looks. because he
was used against most of Benton Harboras toughest opponents. Nevertheless. Sam
ended up with a total of 55 strikeouts and also came quite close to pitching a no-
hit. no-run game.
Other Tiger pitchers were Claude Williams with a 2 and 0 record. Pete Rhodes
with a 1 and 1 record. and Eldon DeWitt. who also had a 1 and 1 record.

The tracksters faced five dual meet foes and bowed to four of them. The two
victories over Dowagiac and Holland were upsets over highly rated teams. In the
triangular meets with Holland and Muskegon Heights. and Muskegon and Muskegon
Heights, the Tigers placed second and third respectively. They were also a surprised
second in the one hundred and two hundred twenty yard dashes -in the regional
meet to qualify for state. The Tigers continued their domination over state rivals
with Leroy Goff placing first in the pole vault at 11' 6" without much trouble.
What Harbor lacked in all-around brilliance. it made up with the phenomenal per-
formance of its star Don Marler. Don. only a junior, turned in thirteen firsts through-
out the season. At State he ran one hundred yards in 10.1 seconds to place sixth.
Dan Young did pretty good in tying for fifth in the high jumps at the regionals.
Ken Harper pulled in seventh in the one mile run. ,lim Reynolds did his best to
place fifth in shot put. Oliver Edwards was also a steady scorer.
The tracksters were coached by Mr. J. Rogers and lVlr. R. Hynd.
