SIDNEY C. MITCHELL
Superintendent of Schools
As one of your goals in life I would like to
commend patriotism to the Class of 1947 as a
lllost desirable one.
There are two kinds of patriotism. There is
one which is arrogant, truculent, covetous, and
intolerant. This kind, when motivated, leads to
war and can be justly charged with much of the
misery of mankind. But there is the other kind
of patriotism which expresses itself in quiet.
decent self respect: which leads you to devote
yourself to the task of seeing that your country
stands first, not in power, arrogance and covet-
ousness, but in service to her citizens and all
mankind. lt is this kind that I would commend
to you. It is the real goal of all education. It is
an ideal to which you may well devote your
energy, your intelligence and your life.
Believing that the public schools belong-t
the public, Supt. Mitchell, with the cooperatio
ol' the Board of Education, is constantly strivin
for the fullest utilization of the Benton Harbo
public school system. His original plan for super
vised correspondence courses within the hig
school curriculum, a plan now widely copie
both in America and abroad, led to the installa
tion of machinery for technical vocational train
ing. XVhen war came, our school was ready wit
the equipment to train badly needed war worker
under a program of state aided and supervise
night school. Looking to the future, and alway
expanding, our school was prepared, at the en
of the war, to continue to serve the public witl
a specialized educational program for returnin
This year has seen the realization of
Nlitchell's long hoped for dream of ahlunior Col
lege in Benton Harbor. Even in the Hrst year i
is marking itself as a definite element in Michi
gan's educational world.
Thus a normal program of public school edu
cation, plus the factors of Correspondenc
Courses, Vocational Training, the Veterans' In
titute, and the junior College, is leading directl
into the inevitable field of a broad program o
adult education for all. Truly the Benton Har
bor schools serve the public, and it is nrimaril
Supt. Mitchell's vision and leadership that hav
made this possible.
