The Spirit of '76 1S act1ve again' Just ZOO years after the signing of the
Declaration of Independence and Z0 years after our graduation lfind myself
Sp1r1ted back to the heart of New York City busy in court during the day and
looking 1n on Motorama even1ngs
Ifelt lt necessary to leave my law pract1ce in Wash1ngton D C to come to
New York and defend an old classmate Leroy W1lmot When his tr1al h1t the
headl1nes eyebrows raised high for who of the 56 seniors at Bentley would be
charged with 'sw1ndl1ng two old maids ' of a hard earned fortune 'P
My 1nterest1n Motorama 1S easy to understand for many of my former class
mates are associated one way or another w1th the Show I probably would never
have v1s1ted it 1f newspaper columnist former Carole Ann Brown had not de
voted her ent1re Sunday edition to po1nt1ng up Leroy s human mterest angle
She learned that there was almost a reun1on in sess1on when she approached
a large fruit wagon Just outside Motorama that was filled with bananas The
salesman Bob Bruzewski eagerly told her that B,ob R1pka was his partner 1n
the banana business In add1t1on to his commercial art Ripka had found time
to make practical a zipper for a banana skin
At Bob's suggest1on Carol and I visited Motorama Immediately our at
tentionwas drawn to the magnificent decorations that made the dazzling setting
for the cars and helicopters of 1976 Judy Grahn an 1nter1or decorator of note
1n the States and in Hawaii must have had her old classmates 1n mind when she
chose s1lver and blue for the Motorama color scheme
One of the f1rst persons we met was John Barniske lolllng over the hood of
a Zlppo Rod sports car Dr1v1ng 1S John's specialized field now and he travels
Before we left John Alice Skranz and Marge Stowers wandered by and w e r e
so engrossed 1n chatter that we had to shout a Hello there" to claim the1r at
tention Al1ce was swathed in mink and diamonds making us very consc1ous of
the fact that she marr1ed a m11l1ona1re She conf1ded to us however that she
stil' has a soft spot 1n her heart for goats and has a goat farm at the back ofher
500 acre estate
Margie surprised us by relating that she has never married How she avoided
all the proposals of her youth 1S d1ff1cult to understand but she must be st1ll
'looking for we learned she 1S a sp1nster dean at a small boys' college 1n
Just as our little group was breaking up Pat Elder husband Doyne and f1Ve
children came straggl1ng along They were tak1ng a vacat1on and "do1ng New
York C1ty Pat had been harping for Z0 years that she was promised a New York
honeymoon 'At long last " said Doyne 'th1s IS it
At th1s point thewhole show room was rocked by a raucous laugh Recogn1z
ing afam111ar note we 1nvest1gated and weren't too amazed to f1nd Leonard Dan
non in a corner talking to Gary McGee It was a b1t amazing however to find
that Leonard had cap1tal1zed on h1s laugh and was now drawing top salary as a
professional laughter for CBS television
What had caused Leonard's laughter to erupt was Gary McGee's booth near
the door where1n Gary was managing the largest charity fund of New York State
the Let s Help Amer1can Art1sts" fund It seems personal1t1es don't change
ra.d1cally for as lremember Gary he was always happiest when nearest money
One part ofthe counter ofGary's booth was devoted to d1splay1ng a new book
1001 HOUSEHOLD HINTS by the popular writer and 'household hinter ' Carol
The program of the even1ng was about to start and as the l1ghts dimmed
who should approach the microphone but Dan Wheaton Preacher Dan now
