U.S.S. BENNINGTON . . . ln its first tribute to this victory, the Navy assigned the name BENNINGTON to a 1,700-ton gunboat. Commissioned in 1891, the vessel was built as a three-masted steam schooner and was armed with six guns. During the Spanish-American War, the gunboat took formal possession of Wake lsland on January 17, 1899. The boat then cruised in Philippine waters assisting the U.S. Army in supressing the lnsurrection. The first BENNINGTON was decommissioned after the Spanish-Amer- ican War on January 3, 1901, but two years later on March 2, 1903, she was recommis- sioned. On July 21, 1905, a boiler exploded on the vessel, killing 66 men outright and leaving only 12 out of a crew of 208 men not iniured. The gunboat was then decommissioned on August 17, 1905, and sold to a firm in Hawaii.
