Qc.. Rear Admiral William J. MORAN entered the Navy in February 1941. Upon completion of flight training in December of 1941 and advanced carrier training in Norfolk, he reported to his first squadron, Fight- ing THREE CVF-31. Subsequently, Rear Admiral Moran was assigned to VF-72 embarked in the USS HORNET KCV-8l. After HORNET was sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942. he flew from the escort carrier NASSAU and from the Island of Guadalcanal. Between 1943 and 1965 Rear Admiral Moran held a variet of command and ff ' y sta assign- ments and in August 1965 assumed command of the USS RAINIER CAE-5l. He then assumed command of the USS RANDOLPH KCVS-15l on 7 October 1966, and reported as Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Group THREE on 11 August 1967. , 41 in XQMRQQ E ' K A G - v I M,-vii'
