Bennington In tribute to the defeat of a detachment of British-hired I-Iessians by Colonel john Stark and his New Hampshire militiamen at Ben- nington, Vermont in 1777, a 1, 700 ton gunboat was commissioned as the USS BENNINGTON in 1891. A steam sloop armed With six guns, she operated in the South Atlantic and European Waters until she joined the Pacific Fleet in 1894. The gunboat Bennington op- erated along the coasts of North and Central America, and the Hawaiian Islands, until the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. While enroute to the Philippines, she took formal possession of Wake Island for the United States on january 17, 1899. The gunboat Bennington was decommissioned in 1901, recommissioned in 1903, and then permanently decommissioned on August 17, 1905. .I .fi ' y,. 5 A ,r, s... 0 , . - .r .. '3 ox - - . 2 I 1 U.S.S. Bennington QCVS - 205 The second Bennington to join the fleet was commissioned as CV-20 on August 6, 1944. During the first months ofvl945, she participated in air strikes against the japanese Home Islands, the Volcano Islands ,Q 1 f 4, , and in the Gkinawa campaign. After the War, she Was decommissioned and placed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned in 1950, she was extensively refitted and designated a jet attack carrier CCVAD. Q After operating in the North Atlantic and Mediterrean for three years, she joined the Pacific Fleet in 1955. After three deployments to the E Far East, she was redesignated an Antisubmarine Warfare Carrier CCVSD in 1959. In 1963, Bennington became the first carrier to visit the Alaskan ports of Juneau and Kodiak. She steamed to the aid of floodtorn communities around Eureka, California in 1964. X E E E Bennington deployed from Long Beach, California on November 4, 5 1966 to begin her tenth Far Eastern cruise. This book is the story of ' that cruise. 2 1 8 S g Q
