'ss fr, j: it 1, CAPTAIN MARVIN E BARNETT COMMANDING OFFICER M E tt Barnett a veteran of more than 25 years Navacfagjgivqce afsma naiilvee of Tampa Fla He attended high school in Deland Fla and graduated from Florida Southern College where he was named in Who's Who in American Colleges While attending college, Captain Barnett distinguished himself in athletics by earning numerous trophies in football basketball and tennis Following college graduation and a summer of graduate study, he entered the Navy in September 1939 and underwent flight training at Pensacola Fla Upon being designated a Naval aviator in July 1940, he was commissioned an Ensign I Captain Barnett's first tour of flying duty was with a.Cru1ser Squadron home-ported at Terminal Island Long Beach, Calif. When the initial attack of Pearl Harbor took place he was serving as Officer of the Deck aboard the cruiser USS HONOLULU in Pearl. During the war he participated in the campaigns at Midway, Guadalcanal, Kiska and the Solomon Islands After World War II and following General Line School at Newport, R I Captain Barnett became Executive Officer of the Navy's first jet A tour of duty with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Carrier Detail Branch took him to Washington, D.C., in 1948. At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict he was promoted to Commander and named Commanding Officer of VF 172 which became the first F2H Jet squadron to fly combat in Korea Flying the Banshee jet F2H, he recorded 76 combat missions From 1952 to 1954 Captain Barnett served ashore in billets as Air Group Training Officer U S Naval Air Atlantic and later as Jet T raining Officer for Chief Naval Air T1 a1n1ng He has had carrier duty aboard the USS SARATOGA as Commander, Air Group THREE USS WASP as Executive Officer and the USS HORNET where he was Operations and Plans Officer for Commander Carrier Division 19 Recent assignments include attending the Naval War College in Newport R I and Fleet Operations Branch Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Captain Barnett's last duty assignment was Commanding Officer of the ammunition ship USS RAINIER In addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross with two stars, the Air Medal with eight stars and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Captain Barnett has the American Campaign Medal, Pacific Campaign Medal with 11 stars and the Korean Service Medal.
