REAR ADMIRAL RoBERT A. MAcPHERsoN COMMANDER ANTI-SUBMARINEiWAR1FARE GROUP V Rear Admiral Robert Anthony Macpherson, a native of Albuquerque, N M is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, class of 1933. After 2 1 f2 years service aboard USS TENNESSEE, he took flight training and was des1gnatedaNava1 Aviator in 1937. For -the next three years he was assigned to Scouting Squadron 3 embarked in USS SARATOGA, and in cruiser scouting squadrons in USS NORTHAMPTON and USS CHESTER In March 1942, and for the next two years, embarked in USS MARYLAND, he commanded Observation Squadron 4 with additional duties as Staff Aviator for Commander, Battleships Pacific Fleet and continued these duties upon the command's redesignation in 1943, as Group 2 Fifth Amphibious Force. For aerial participation in amphibious landings in 1943-1944 at Tarawa Eniwetok and Majuro atolls, he was awarded the Dis- part of World War Il, he served as Executive Officer of USS KWAJALEIN in 1944 and as Air Officer aboard USS YORKTOWN in 1945 For the latter duty he received a Gold Star in lieu of a second Bronze Star Medal, with Combat V and the Presidential Unit Citation. Admiral Macpherson's shore duty has been at Naval Air Station, Seattle as an instructor at the Naval Academy, Executive Officer of Naval Air Activity, Port Lyautey, French Morocco, Planning Officer, Naval Gun Factory, U.S. Naval Attache and Naval Attache for Air, Australia and New Zealand, and Assistant for NATO and .ICS Matters to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations fAirb. Post war sea duty assignments have included command of USS CAPE ESPERANCE QTCVU-8855 USS HANCOCK CCVA-193, Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander Carrier Division 2. He was selected as Rear Admiral while serving in the Bureau of Naval Personnel to rank as of 1 July 1961. Prior to assuming the position of Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Group 5 he was in command of Patrol Force Seventh FleetfTaiwan Patrol Force for 2 years Admiral Macpherson is married to the former Marney Smith of Springville N.
