Naval Acad- emy in I927. ln l93l, he received his Navy Wings af Pensacola and ioined Torpedo Squadron I, affached fo fha carrier Lexingfon. During World War ll. he served on fhe USS Chenango as Executive Officer and as Commanding Officer of fhe USS Alfamaha. Captain Sutherland assumed command of the Benningfon in Augusf of l953 affer graduating from fhe Naval War Col- lege. CAPTAIN WILLIAM A. SUTHERLAND, JR. COMMANDING OFFICER, USS BENNINGTON I wish to commend you, the oliicers and men of the Bennington, for the remarkable job you have done on this, our first Med. Cruise. We will long remember 'Mariner', Istanbul, Athens, Paler- mo, Cenoa, Cannes, Naples, Marseilles, La Spezia, Barcelona, Lisbon and Gibraltar, There were humorous times and tough times, lots of play and yet more workg but whether in port or at sea you acted like true Navy men and upheld the traditions of those who have gone before as ambassadors of good will, and true representa- tives of the United States.
