The Bennington headed for Palermo, Sicily to meet the USS Coral Sea. ln the harbor, the Coral Sea was waiting to stage a traditional Sixth Fleet welcome. Her motor launches set upon us with signs and loud-speakers to tell what would be in store in the coming months. When the ofhcial relieving had been completed, the Coral Sea pulled up anchor and departed for Norfolk. Palermo harbor offered little protection from the sea. It was not until our third and last day there that the water calmed down to the point where liberty boats could be run. 'We found a city of eobble stone streets and horse drawn taxis. The local guides were certain to point out the cathedral and opera house as their finest build- ings, and to recommend a trip to the Catacombs out- side the city.
