CLASS PROPHECY I N I V- .953 IQS4 I knewl had eaten too much caviar at the Stork Club that night, be- l952 cause as soon as I went to sleep, I started dreaming., Maybe it was be- cause I had been looking through my high school annual that I dreamed of some of my former classmates. I saw Billie Marie Peek and Billy Finley, those renowned opera singers, in Bubba and Barbara's Drug Store having a prescription of Dr. J 'Nelle Gibson's filled by Charles Sanford. In walked Jean Hamer, the noted psychiatrist, accompanied by her most famous patient, Hugh McColl. X QYou see, the cotton market had fallen the week before.j She had advised X Hugh to spend six months on the farms of Gene and Bill Bullard, but he chose instead, to go a.broad on Padgett Airlines. I woke up about this time and had to go into the kitchen for an Alka- seltzerg but as soon as I went back to bed, I'started dreaming again. This time the setting was on a golf course. Charles Vaughn and Ben Ho- gan were teeing off. Charles had made so much money in professional golf that year that it took three secretaries, Gertrude Chavis, Dot Jones, and Ina Jacobs, to keep count. I saw in the crown those outstanding scientists Jo Anne Baugha.n, Deryle Chavis, and Chip Chamness, talking with Arren Newton and A. G. Maddox about jet cars. Also present were two stars of the recent world series, Charles Bennett and Charles McKinney, wlio, with the excellent publicity they received in the newspaper from Drake Braddy and Tommie Collier, had become the liest known baseball players in the country. All bets on this match were made through the Crow Crosland Wire Service, and those who needed to borrow money to bet, were directed to the Collins-Cox Finance Company to see either Hettie Lee or Effie Leviner about how much they wanted. l At this time that fifth helping of pie a la mode began to take effect, and the setting changed to a party given by Motsy Johnson in her mansion. Nat King Cole, Sara Vaughan, and Ray Anthony, who were brought there by their managers, Mar- garet Hester, Frankie Wiggins, and Paulette Nelson, provided the entertainment along with Bill Newton, the comedian. Sally Beth Evans a nd her brother-in-law, Edward, the movie star, were there with those famous entertainers of stage, screel and radio, the Coo-Coo Sisters , composed of Catherine Drake, Ada Marion Hunter, Jennie Lee Barringer, and Shirley Huckabee. The stars of the Detroit Lions that year, Carroll Taylor, Gordon Driggers, and Lowell Thomas, were there along with their coach, William Easterling. Two school teachers, Beulah Creech and Marjorie Thompson, were wearing jewelry created by Sara Ann Goodale. The beautitul evening gowns they wore came from the dress shop co-owned by Henrietta Mea- chum and Edith Gregorie. The interior decorating which was done by Annie Lou Douglas and Elizabeth Dudley was superb. Mary Gordon Edens, the famous horse ba.ck rider, was there along with Helen Evans, the novelist. DOH IIOHCS. Wh0S6 0ICh6S- tra Motsy couldn't get beca.use he was previously engaged at the Waldorf Astoria, sent his top singer, Mary Sanders to help compensate for the lack. The food, which was furnished by the Lee-Polson Grocery Store Chain was delicious. The world famous three piece orchestra, composed of Merlin Jacobs, Susan Jordan, and Doris Jackson, ha.d been held over in Paris and couldn't attend the patty, but Mrs. Pearl Vanderbilt and Mrs. Ruth Boyd Rockefellow were there.
