qilu-alfa On one side-ATrica, The dark conTinenT7 on The oTher-Spain. ln beTween-a narrow neck oT waTer, connecTing The ATlanTic Ocean wiTh The MediTerranean Sea. SenTinel over This gaTeway is The Rock oT GibralTar, a synonym Tor Tirmness everywhere. TWe approached The Rock in a rain squall which shrouded The upper halT in misT and added To iTs rugged appearance. Rising sTraighT up Trom The waTer's edge, The easTern side oT The TorTress seemed To grow higher as we drew nearer, Tinally disappearing in The clouds.' A break in The midsT gave us a good- view oT The enTire Rock-and we could see how The expression had iTs sTarT. IT would Take a loT To 'move Tha+ monTsrous pebble. Pulling inTo The harbor, we Tied up across our relieving ship, The U.S.S. WaTTs TDD-567l. The clouds rolled TogeTher again and iT seTTled down To rain in earnesT Tor The resT oT our sTay. Who leTs a liTTle rain inTerTere wiTh liberTy, Though? Going ashore here was like revisiTing Merrie Olde Eng- land. The Tea shops close aT seven and The beer is warm. AlmosT everyone in C5ibralTar buT The BriTish garrison is Spanish: iT seemed odd To hear a Spaniard speaking broken English wiTh a Cock- ney accenT, . and Relic MosT oT The iciTy daTes 'way back-The garrison buildings are decoraTed wiTh carved sTone, and The sTreeTs are barely wide enough To pass modern auTomobiles. The Rock is so sTeep They had To build The sTreeTs on The swiTchback principle in order To reach The Top, Bands oT rock apes, pro- TecTed by The Crown since They re warned oT The approach oT a hosTile TleeT, roam The Top oT The Rock. Tweeds and woolens were good buys here, and odd-looking coTnrapTions known as 'Rolls Razors ap- peared in increasing numbers around The ship. Al- Though The TorTress was closely guarded, Tour parTies were allowed under supervision, and a Tew oT us managed To geT on The inside and look ouT. l-lollowed ouT like a Swiss cheese and sTudded wiTh gun emplacemenTs, The Rock is a ThreaT To any enemy surTace craTT ThaT mighT aTeTempT To pass Through The sTraiTs. To mosT oT us, The imporTanT evenT in GibralTar was The relieving oT The Benner by The WaTTs . This accomplished, we were impaTienT To move on. IT was wiTh Tew regreTs, Then, Than on Janu- ary 26Th, Tive monThs To The day ouT oT Newport we Turned our backs on The MediTerranean and cur Taces Toward home.

II f ,f ,W M W if 'ff Course - Two-seven-zero: speed - TiTTeen. ln company wiTh The cruisers Columbus and Quin- cy and seven oTher desTroyers we sTeamed down The TracT made by Columbus on his voyage oT discovery. Two days ouT oT GibralTar, iT was rough: The nexT day was rougher. Running ouT of one sTorm inTo anoTher, There was noThing To do buT sTeer sTraighT ahead. We didn'T mind a biT, Though, We'd heard ThaT The naTives in our nexT porT were Triendly, and we were anxious To see Tor ourselves. No amounT oT pounding, rolling or piTching could discourage us, Tor iT was rumored To be a Two-secTion liberTy'porT. The word' was ThaT The raTe of exchange was low lTwenTy nickles To The dollarl buT The peope-spoke Tair English. Probably a good porT. Shining shoes became a popular pasTime as The days wenT by, and The mess hall was Tull oT blues-pressers beTween meals. The lucky ones who had leave upon arrival packed Their bags while sTill several hundred miles ouT. AT lasT The day came. A howling norTh wind welcomed us home, buT a Tew seagulls circling The ship were The inly indicaTion OT land beyond The Thick misT. The hours wore on: in column Torma- Tion now, we approached The coasT. LiberTy hounds in dress blues wandered aimlessly abouT, glassy- eyed. Then like a curTain The misT liTTed and we were enering NarraganseTT Bay. We shivered in peacoaTs and waTchcaps aT quarTers, lmpaTienTlyf we waiTed our Turn To Tie up, and as The TirsT line wenT over, The liberTy secTion crouched aT iTs mark. The cusToms oTTicer cleared us in shorT order, and in a body The chieTs were ashore and disappearing in The disTance. Wives and Tamilies waiTed on The dock. From odd corners and crev- ices ThroughouT The ship 400-day clocks were dragged. Sailors sTaggered up The dock, unnler The weighT oT souvenirs collecTed Trom nine coun- Tries. V IT has been a good cruise, and one which will provide many memories in The years To come. We have mixed wiTh people oT many naTions, belieTs, andlpurposes, gaining a lasTing impression oT The European way oT liTe, be iT good or bad: and we have leTT impressions oT ourselves wiTh each con- TacT made. WheTher we have helped TulTill The purpose oT The goodwill policy remains To be seen. Perhaps our visiTs may help To decide some Tu- Ture issuerperhaps They will be TorgoTTen, in Time. by The people whom we visiTed. CerTainly, To us. The crew of The Benner, iT was a cruise To be remembered,
