The kids look a lively inleresl in lhe ship: il broughl oul lhe explorer in mosl ol lhem-ask lhe guys who acled as guides! Allhough il was lhe middle ol winler, lhe main drag ol Cannes was beller lhan an Easler parade. All hands look keen pleasure in walching lhe lall slyles go by-nol lo menlion lhe models. They've gol an awlul lol ol perlume in France and we look many gallons aboard lhe Benner. We didn'l make much ol an impression in Mar- seilles-loreign ships have been coming and QO- ing lrom lhal porl lor cenluries, and we were DO exceplion. The cily has a well developed harbor. We were- lhanklul lor lhe sigh seawall, whiCl1 broke mosl ol lhe cold wind lhal descended upOf1 us soon aller arrival, Unusual , lhey said-bul il snowed jusl lhe same. Il was a long cab ride inlo lown. which WGS much like any large American cily. Marseilles is primarily a seaporl, lhough, and as such depends a lol on lhe sailor, bolh civilian and navy. The cab drivers here seemed delermined lo live up lo lhe repulalion lhal French cabbies have lhe world over, bul compared wilh lhose in TurkeY- lhey were a bunch ol shrinking violels. Marseilles slay was quiel and unevenllul in lhe main-considering lhal New Year's Eve WGS Speni lhere. Because ol lhe cold wealherfiimosl Ol U5 were glad lo head lor sunnier climes. BriTish and American inTluence is quiTe evi- denT in AThens, as aTTesTed by The John Bull Bar.
