THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lieutenant Commander George F. Rowland, Jr. was born in Trenton, Missouri on January 2, 1947. He enlisted In the Navy in 1969 as a Fireman and advanced to the rate of Damage Controlman First Class, serving in USS GUNSLON HALL (LSD- 5) and USS NEW ORLEANS (LPH-11). LCDR Rowland attended the University of Kansas through the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education scholarship program and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He was commis- sioned an Ensign In June 1974 upon graduation from KU . His first assignment was USS HASSAYAMPA (AO-145), serv- ing as Communications Officer and Electronic Material Offi- cer from 1974-78. In 1978 he attended the Naval Post Gra- duate School, where he earned a Master of Science degree. After completion of the Department Head Course at Surface Warfare School in Newport, Rhode Island, he served as Engi- neering Officer in USS ELMER MONTGOMERY (FF-1082) and USS LUCE (DDG-38). From 1984-86, LCDR Rowland served as instructor In the Computer Science Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He assumed the duties as Executive Officer in USS BENJAMIN STODDERT (DDG-22) In November 1986. Decorations awarded to LCDR Rowland include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Con- duct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Cam- paign Medal. He and his wife, Joyce, have one child, Gregory age 10, and presently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. 10
