THE COMMANDING OFFICER Commander Errol R. Hurst is a 1966 graduate of Ball State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. After attending Officer Candidate School In Newport, Rhode Island, he was commis- sioned as an Ensign in July 1967. His initial assign- ment was in USS WESTCHESTER COUNTY (LST-1167) where he served as DCA and Engineering Officer from 1967-70. From 1970-73, he served as CIC Officer and Navigator in USS HARRY E. YARNELL (DLG-17). Upon graduation from Destroyer School, he served as Engi- neering Officer in USS THOMAS C. HART (FF-1092), and later as Material Officer for Commander Destroy- er Squadron Four. His initial shore tour was In the Enlisted Performance Branch at BUPERS from 1977- 80. Following a tour as Executive Officer in USS DAVID- SON (FF-1045) during 1980-81, Commander Hurst at- tended the one year Senior Officer Course at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. In July 1985, he assumed command in USS BENJAMIN STODDERT (DDG-22). Decorations awarded Commander Hurst include the Bronze Star with Combat V , Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Rib- bon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Med- al and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
