NAVIGATION DIVISION N Division personnel, who stand watches on the bridge, keep the Officer of the Deck in- formed as to the ship ' s position. A variety of methods are used: during the day when within sight of land, visual fixes are taken, while at night radar fixes are taken. Far from land, however, the Quartermasters turn to the mariners ancient instrument, the sextant. This instrument, in the hands of an expert such as Quartermast Chief Waters, will give the ship ' s position to within 100 yards.
