Each year before school begins, the freshmen come together on orientation night to learn all about being a Benedictine student. In addition to hearing speeches from Fr. Dominic and others, they also get to buy their gym equipment and locks. Orientation is very helpful in that it helps the freshmen get acquainted with the school. Mrs. Jason straightens out a freshman. 66 Welcome to Benedictine! Abbot Roger’s Installation On Sunday, August 30th, 1981, Rev. Roger W. Gries O.S.B. had the Abbatial Blessing bestowed upon him by Bishop Anthony M. Pilla. The Mass was celebrated at St. Benedict Church by Bishop Pilla and concelebrated by Abbot Theodore Kojis O.S.B., Abbot Jerome Koval O.S.B. and Abbot Roger Grics O.S.B. The Mass was a beautiful one with Abbot Roger's family being gift-bearers. Students from Benedictine ushered the event which was a gala but stately affair. I 67 Coach Bossu. A successful leader and a leader lo success. Football Rallies 1981 Captain Bengal (Kay Schmidlin) and his dog sidekick Louie. Proud members of past State Championship football teams show their Benedictine spirit. Captain Bengal and his teammates defeat their foes to spark spirit in the team and in the school. Well-organized rallies haven’t been seen at Benedictine for a decade. To initiate school spirit (lacking in the early months of the year), football rallies were organized. These rallies included cheers, funny skits, singing of the fight song and the Alma Mater, excellent speeches by Fr. Dominic. Mr. Rufus, and Coach Bossu, and special appearances by some members of each past championship team. The rallies proved to be fun and successful in raising school spirit. 68 Health Hill Toy Drive HO! HO! HO! The guys are having more fun than the kids. Sania and all his toys pul a smile on this youngster's face The senior class once again sponsored its annual Christmas toy drive for the children at Health Hill Hospital. They not only repeated as State Champions, but they also finished with a regular season record of 10 wins 0 losses, a mark which has not been accomplished since 1957. The Bengals opened with a 4X-0 victory over West Tech. Tailback Mike O'Neill gained 150 yards on 15 rushing attempts and 3 touchdowns. The defense held West Tech to a minus 17 yards rushing in 33 carries. The following week at Ashland due to a power failure the game was started late. This factor did not seem to bother the team as the offense totaled 566 yards, and a 40-0 victory. By the third game of the season Mike O'Neill was the area’s leading scorer with 7 touchdowns. On a muddy field at John Marshall, the Bengals went to the air for both of its touchdowns, and a 23 yard field goal by-Alex Szocs. 89 I I I In the fourth game of the season against Mansfield Madison the Bcngals found themselves behind for the first time, but an electrifying 70 yard punt return by O’Neill was all the team needed for the margin of victory. The defense only gave up 56 yards rushing, and 25 in the air. and 5 first downs. The fifth game of the season against Fremont Ross left everyone in a shock. The Bengals scored the winning touchdown with 25 seconds remaining in the game. Quarterback Paul Hrisko and wide receiver Rick King combined for two pass plays for a total of 58 yards, to go along with two field goals by Alex S ocs. The defense was keyed by Junior Tackle Mike Griffin. In the sixth game of the season the Bcngals defeated Youngstown Rayen in a record breaking manner. Quarterback Paul Hrisko broke the record for most completions 17, most attempts — 25, and most yards 329, his counterpart wide receiver Rick King broke the record for most receiving yards 235. The defense forced five turnovers. In front of a sellout crowd of over 6,000 people the Bcngals defeated Holy Name 20-12 in the seventh game of the season. Mike O'Neill led the team with 186 yards rushing on 35 carries. The following week found the Bcngals pitted against Cleveland Central Catholic, the only team that defeated them in 1980. This time the team was not to be denied as O'Neill and Federico scored, and Hrisko completed 12 of 20 passes for 173 yards and a 27-7 victory. The tenth game was the climax to a perfect 10-0 season. The Bcngals had a tough time with Padua because they found themselves down 7-0 and 14-7, but a Butch Flynn rushing touchdown, and a pair of Paul Hrisko touchdown passes to Rick King were all they needed. Junior linebacker Tony Helton contributed with two clutch interceptions. Linebacker Tom Flynn continued the defensive assault by putting Trot wood's star running back Tony Cospy out of the game with a broken jaw. Two relay teams (3200m and 400m) ran, and a shot putter threw on the cool, overcast day. While none of the athletes had their best performances at the Ohio State University stadium, they were the largest team from Benedictine to make it to the state finals in many years. The athletes who competed in Columbus (in the order they ran on the relays) were as follows: 3200 RELAY— 7th place Jim Kutrubs Tony Harris Frank Matousek Kevin Johnson 400 m RE LA Y 9th pladc Dave Montgomery Ken Johnson Darryl Nelson Don Durrah SHOT PUT—8th place Calvin Washington A. Many of the team members competed in more than one event. Although the Freshman Track Team was a small squad they did well against many teams twice their size. The Frosh were led by Doug lloolen, who participated in the shot put and 100 meter dash.
