'With the 1961-62 scholastic year, the title Benedictine faculty manager of athletics was abandoned. For the first time since the school's founding in 1927, the Bengal athletic depart- ment was placed under the supervision of a layman. The decision to have athletic director Joe Rufus absorb the work of the faculty manager of athletics was made in June, following the resignation of Father Damian, O.S.B. Father Damian became faculty manager of athletics in June 1959. Mr. Rufus came to Benedictine as an as- sistant coach in 1945. During nine seasons as the Bengals' head football mentor, he guided the Tigers through 83 games, winning 64, losing 14 and tying five. Of the 54 East Senate con- tests, Benedictine won 46 tilts, lost five, tied three and compiled a string of 31 undefeated East Senate encounters. The Bengals under Coach Rufus won the city grid crown in '48, '52: the city co-cham- pionship in '50g the East Senate diadem in '48, '50, '52, '53, and the East Senate co-champion- ship in '45, '5l. With Coach Rufus handling all three sports in 1948, the Tigers captured the city championship in football, basketball and base- ball. The East Senate diamond title was won again in '51, Named athletic director December 6, 1954, the first layman to hold the post at Benedictine relieved Father Augustine, O.S.B. Father Aug- ustine became faculty manager of athletics, serv- ing in that position until June 1959. Father Damian's resigning came as a re- sult ofhis volunteering to ease the overburdened faculty by accepting additional teaching hours.
