The bulk of their efforts goes towards promoting extra-curricular activities and smoothing relation- ships between the students and the administration. The members of this organization are recognized as outstanding pupils in the school. OFFICERS - First row, fl. to rj: R. Hrack, J Kline. Second row: G. Kur- etz, P. Hrisko, T. Father Jerome is always willing to give his advice and spiritual counseling to those who wish his aid. Those who seek spiritual help will always find the door to the chaplain's office open and behind it a capable inspiration to the student body. During the fall and spring of the scholastic year, Benediction is often celebrated at the Marian Grotto, with the entire student body in attendance. This fall, tragedy stunned the entire student body. On October 12 Dennis Duirk died in an automobile accident while returning from a football game, Seniors who knew Dennis for his humor, personality, and friendliness es- pecially mourned the loss of their classmate. Cooperating with one another, the members'of the Incas, Dominoes, and Aztecs Booster Clubs worked during after-school hours painting posters and planning ideas for their respective skits. Composed mainly of seniors, these clubs led the school in spirit and enthus- iasm by conducting rallies and having more active members than any other booster clubs. These clubs were the morale of the team and the behind-the-scenes' champs. To end the football season they combined their skills to produce the torchlight parade and the rally for the Championship Game. Through them both the team and the student body were inspired with the spirit that is characteristic of Benedictine. The big Championship Game Rally sponsored jointly by the I.D.A. A loyal and devoted alumni contribute immensely to the endurance of a school and its work. By their enthusiasm and application to whatever project they undertook, the alumni at Benedictine proved they fall into that class. Knowing the value of a good Catholic education, they have been providing scholarships to promising freshmen. In addition to this charitable venture, they have sent many a boy to Benedictine in virtue of a good word from their alma mater. Furthermore, to promote the physical well-being of the students, the Alumni help to sponsor the Annual Football Banquet. Dances and the Homecoming Football game form the balance of their program. For that purpose, a minor seminary is maintained at Benedictine - primarily for future Benedictines but open to any boy who feels called to serve God. Family life is stressed in the minor seminary. The young men must live together, and by close contact with one another, the spirit of sacrifice is gradu- ally developed in imitation of Christ. Hearns, director, and Father Damian Baloga, O.S.B., moderator, the 55 piece Benedictine band has developed into one of the finest marching bands in the state of Ohio. The members earned deservedly this ranking because of the many tedious hours they practiced every week. Having learned the proper marching tech- niques, the band performed their intricate formations between half-times at the home and away football contests and at the Plain Dealer Championship game. The band members also participated in the Annual Catholic High School Band Festival at John Carroll University on March 31. They attended dances and were frequently repre- sented in extra-curricular activities. They placed mem- bers on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity squads. They were now acquainted with the faculty members: the brothers, the priests, and the lay-teachers. This truly describes the Freshman Class of '57. Their first days in .high school were the usual ones of great confusion, trying to adjust themselves to the rules and regulations, and finding the right room at the right period. But this initial era was of brief duration. Following the advice of their capable moderator, Father Raphael, they soon buckled down to their studies, lent an able and willing hand to such activities as they could, and showed a keen interest in the many campaigns held throughout the year. Freshman 1-B was the first class to reach 100'Z, in the Patron Drive. FRESHMAN REPRESENTATIVES-Around W the table fl. to rj: A. Antonelli, R. Nowak, i C. Grzep, J. Russell, T. Turdik, A. Although beginning the season with a defeat at Lorain, the Bengals through work and sweat, went on to pulverize all East Senate competition and even in defeat spread their fame at Massillon. Then as a tribute to head coach, Augie Bossu and assistant coaches, Ed Kubancik and Ed Duray, they humbled St. Ignatius, for the second consecutive year to gain the city championship. The victorious season must be classed as a team effort with individual performance in the background. T.he starting offensive line averaging 189 lbs., and the backtield with an average of 170 lbs. combined with a deadly passing and running attack, produced a team respected by all opponents. Forming the nucleus of the City Champion Bengals were 10 senior letter- men, led by Capt. quarterback Paul Hrisko. On the line were ends Mike Mayher and Tom Pacl, tackle Jim Jakubowski, guards Tony Campanelli, Joe Chapon and Andy Pusateri, and centers Tony Halasz and Larry Naymik.
