There certainly is no question about their academic training. All our teachers have their Bachelor's degrees, and sixteen of them have their Master's degrees. Besides teaching, the teachers have other interests. Some would be described as a hobby and others would be necessary duties. Many of the students never picture a teacher doing any- thing but teaching. In the following pages we have tried to illustrate as nearly as possible the ways the teachers occupy their time out of school. These pictures we consider unusual and reveal- ing. We have enjoyed visiting the teachers in their homes, and hope that you will enjoy learning more of their personalities and ways of living. 359' MISS DONNA CRAWFORD, on the left, and MISS ALICE SCHAFMAN, on the right are secretaries in the business office of Community Unit School District 100. The coaches chose JIM HOINES as the most improved player. TOM NEWELL was sel- ected as the other co-captain. Good work! CUHCHES Mr. Joe Lewis, Athletic Director of Community Unit School District 9100, is serving his ninth year as a coach in Bel- videre. He guides the varsity baseball team and instructs the junior varsity and fresh- man basketball squads. Mr. Lewis is junior high football coach and teaches all boys' physical education classes in B. H. S. The difficult job of making schedules for all Buc teams has been well handled by Joe. Nice going, Beansie! Y V' tax 3, gsm,-. :.i.jiMQ: ...,. - wgif- --1 ':1--'- Mr. Terry Ryan has completed his first season as coach of the varsity foot- ball team after being moved up from his position as frosh-soph football mentor. Despite a lack of experienced players, he worked hard to bring forth a rugged football team this fall. Terry is junior high and grade school physical education instructor as well as frosh-soph basketball and tennis coach. Swell job, Terry! Mr. Bill McKnight has added the duties of assistant varsity football and var- sity track coaching to his former position as instructor of mathematics. Bill worked as a scout during the football season. All the fellows appreciate Bill's suggestions, and it can certainly be said, Well done, Bill. For the first time, Mr. Stan Patrick guided the frosh-soph football team, and lead them through a very successful season. However, the game which Stan has played most and personally favors is basketball. This year he is coaching his third varsity team. Each of his teams has made an excellent record. Keep up the good work, Stan. IHHIIHGERS Victory or defeat, here is one group of boys in B. H. S. who always turn in a winning job, the athletic managers. These boys help to issue equipment, attend all practice sessions, hang up racks, administer tape and wraps to the players, give rub downs, sort game suits, run errands for the coaches, and, in general, wait on the athletes hand and foot. Their cooper- ation in performing these duties so smoothly, earns for them the award letters which they so well deserve. First Row: R. Hyser, B. Rairdin, J. Goranson. Second Row: R. Hill, R. Tom Newell set the pace by scoring four touchdowns. Giles Turner and Oscar Hodel both crossed the goal line once, and Marvin Schuster place kicked three extra points. Freeport couldn't stop a superior Little Bucs team, and the Belvidere outfit rolled to a 19-6 triumph A Hodel to Maxon to Turner pass and lateral combination was particularly effective in this game. Turner scored twice, and Hodel hit for another TD. Schuster kicked the extra point. Homecoming fans thrilled to see the Little Bucs plaster the Reavis under- studies, 2.1-0, for their third straight win. Newell tallied twice and was supported by Turner's TD and three place kicks by Schuster. Once they got started, the Little Bucs showed the same power and spirit by whipping Marmion's little Cadets, 14-Z. Corning from behind Newell scored twice, while Schuster completed both conversions. Failure to use advantages paved the way to the Frosh-Soph squad's first defeat. Sterling scored in the last two minutes of the game to win a 7-O de- cision. Parents' Night saw the Little Bucs fall before an always terrific Moose- heart eleven, 18-7. The determined Frosh-Soph squad tried to stage a come- back as Hodel hit paydirt following a Hodel to Newell to Rowe pass combination good for 30 yards, but Mooseheart wasn't to be stopped. An undefeated DeKalb team ended the Little Bucs' season on a sour note by crushing the Belvidere eleven, 45-0. It just wasn't the Little Bucs' night, as the powerful DeKalb outfit rolled to victory from the kickoff till the final gun Nevertheless, the Little Bucs finished the season with a creditable 4-3 record against stiff competition. Their strong line and powerful, speedy backs showed a lot of ability throughout the year. After a scoreless first half, guard Don Fair blocked a Freeport kick. George Elliott picked up the ball and ran for a TD. With three minutes remaining in the game, Freeport ,,, knotted the score on a Z0 yard pass. The most heartbreaking defeat of the season came when the Bucs lost their Home- coming tilt to Reavis, 13-12. Coming from behind a 7-0 score, Terry Asbury and Fred Shook went over for Belvidere and gave them a 12-7 half-time lead. Reavis gambled in the fourth quarter and scored with five minutes to play. Luck was against the Bucsg it was a tough game to lose. Belvidere's varsity came fighting back in their fourth game of the season by humbling a large Marmion outfit, 13-6. After trailing 6-O the Bucs bounced back into the game as Dave James picked up a kickoff and raced 80 yards to paydirt. Marv Schuster tallied the Bucs' first extra point of the season and Belvidere went out in front, 7-6. With one minute remaining in the game, Cliff Erickson cinched the Bucs' victory by scoring on a pass interception. Sterling, one of the best teams in northern Illinois, beat the Bucs, Z6-14, but only after stemming a gallant comeback attempt. After trailing Z6-0 at half-time, Belvidere scored twice on passes from Paul Rednour to Bernie Craig and from Terry Asbury to Tony Ashens. Marv Schuster kicked both conversions. The Bucs suffered their worst defeat in years as the Kankakee Kays crushed them 46-6. The Kankakee running game was too strong for the crippled Bucs. Belvidere's lone tally was made on a 30 yard pass from Jim Schultz to Jim Elliott. The Bucs closed the season by los- ing another heartbreaker to a DeKalb crew which hadn't won a game all season. Paul Johnson hit paydirt in the second quarter for the Big Bucs' only tally of the night. DeKalb just couldn't seem to miss as they pulled ahead via the air, winning 13-6. Although their 2-4-l record wasn't too impressive, Belvidere's Big Bucs of '53 showed a lot of spirit, sports- manship, and team work. They were hampered by injuries and lack of re- serves, but they played every game to win and never gave up until the final whistle blew. Hopes ran high when the Bucs de- feated the powerful DeKalb Barbs. Belvidere's big center, Jim Smart, hooped enough points to gain an im- pressive victory. Dreams of an undefeated season were shatte red on the following weekend, as the West Rockford Warriors dumped the Bucs with their high scoring attack. West's exceptionally tall team had the most difficulty holding down little Jim Schultz, Belvidere's high point man that night. In their first home game, the Big Bucs couldn't seem to get roll- ing against Waterman. On ecember 18, however, they got back on the track with a victory over Kirkland. On the next night, they traveled to Marmion and were handed a sur- prise defeat by the Cadets. Christmas vacation got off on a dismal note as a hot Hebron five ran wild in the first half and then stopped any attempt at a Belvidere rally throughout the final quarters. Page 80 In the annual DeKalb Holiday Tourn- ament, the Bucs came back with a dazzling victory over Maple Park. ln the second round, Leyden's defending champions eliminated Belvidere, how- ever. Beloit handed the Bucs another loss as the new year started, which avenged the upset we had handed them last year. Mooseheart was no competition for the Bucs as the local crew netted an impressive score on the home court. With hi h scorer Jim Smart back in action fgnllowing an injury in the DeKalb tourney, the Bucs almost pulled the upset of the year. They ran nip and tuck with the vaunted East Rockford Rabs before falling by a mere 2 points. St. Edwards and Rochelle took the Bucs in the next home games, both with 2 points more than the Bucs were able to scrape up. A victory over Harlem was followed by losses to Dunbar, an all colored team from Chicago, and West Aurora. On February 6, East's Rabs came to Bel- vide re for another match and had their hands full stopping the Big Bucs by nine points. The victory drought ended with a win over Genoa. Tom Jones led the way with Z5 points. Hapless Freeport tried next for their first win of the season, but fell in the last half. Fans who turned out for the Marengo game on the following Tuesday saw the best individual scoring ef ort ever turned in on the Community Building floor. Further- more, they saw the schoo1's individual scor ing record fall as big Jim Smart dumped in an amazing 43 points. Belvidere traveled to Reavis next and claimed an easy win. Powerful Rochelle beat the Bucs again in the season's finale, giving Belvidere a regular season's recor of 9 victories and 13 defeats. QQ ZZJZ ,. Among the many surprises pulled by Terry Ryan' Little Bucs this year, the greatest seemed to be the performances turned in by the team's freshmen. Returning so homores had to hustle all year to holjd their starting positions, and the result was a spirited team which supplemented height with speed. For the regular season, the Little Bucs compiled a record of 12 wins against 8 osses. Furthermore, it s ould be considered that two losses to Rochelle and one to St. Edwards were by only two points. The Little Bucs opened the season with a low-scoring win over DeKalb. Following a loss to West Rockford, they bounced back to trip Waterman and Kirkland. East Rock- ford blasted the Little Bucs, and this was followed by two point beatings from St. Edwards and Rochelle. Harlem's understudies lost their undefeated record to the Little Bucs in a one point over-time victory at Harlem. After beatin Dunbar of Chicago, the Little Bucs dropped decisions to West Aurora and East Rockford Then came a four game winning streak with victories over Genoa, Freeport, Marengo and Reavis.
