FOOTBALL On September fifteenth the B. H. S. heavies opened their season at home, playing Dundee to a scoreless tie. The following week they traveled to Crystal Lake where they were beaten 7-0 and on September twenty-ninth played their second tie of the season at Mendota. Returning to their home field for the next game, the team played the most thrilling game of the season against DeKalb, but in spite of stellar running by Stan Reiman and line playing by the whole team, they were defeated 8-7. On October thirteenth the heavies romped over Dixon, our bitterest rivals, to the score of 19-6. The team played the remaining games at home, being defeated by Geneva on October twentieth but bringing the season to a strong finish by conquering Sterling, 19-6, and Harvard, .LO-0. Bob was this year's acting captain and was one ofthe best ball handlersin the conference. In spite of many badspills, Maxie was one of the team's highest Scflrefs. Bob proved to be an excellent re- bounder and a good all-around player. He has another year to play for B. H. S. 'ABuzz is a very consistent player. He will be back next year. Proud to be playing in one of the finest gyms in northern Illinois, B. H. S. teams made the basketball season of 1939-40 one of the greatest that Belvidere has ever witnessed. In spite of the fact that only two heavyweight lettermen returned, Coach Craig did a line job in building up a winning team. On December first the majors christened the new building by defeating Harlem 41-14. After the defeat of Woodstock and Marengo, the heavies lost to Dixon 26-16. On December twenty-second, in the presence of an overflow crowd, Belvidere nosed out Rockford 28-24, in a game that was packed with thrills from beginning to end. The B. H. S. heavies won their next game from Princeton 34-18, but then suffered four straight defeats at the hands of Dundee, DeKalb, Sterling, and Rockford. They came out of the slump to beat Mendota 31-23 but then lost a thriller to Dixon 21-19. On January thirtieth the classy VVaterman team came to Belvidere and won by a score of 20-15. After defeating Princeton on their Hoor, the heavies returned home to win a very exciting game from DeKalb 24-23. Traveling to Harlem, Belvidere emerged victorious in that scrap. The last two home games brought defeats for Sterling and Marengo, as did the one remaining tilt of the regular schedule. This thriller, Belvidere versus Mendota, ended with a score of 32-30. The big event of the year was the Spring Revue, given on Nlay 24th. As usual, this event was a great success, as the girls had worked very hard on this, the lirst to be given in the new building. The Queen's Court was made up of the following students: Sm1iw'.vfl'hy'llis Balentyne, Barbara Buker, Ruth Cornish, Adaline Ryan, Beth Sisson. f71mi0r.vfBetty Rulison, Mary Dreelan, .lanace Schindler. This year the girls were hostesses at a Play Day held on April 6th. G. A. A. members from Durand, South Beloit, and Harlem were present and the day was thoroughly en-ioyed by all. The theme for the event was Kiddies' Day . Lunch was served at noon and later a program was presented, the numbers being given by representatives from all the towns participating. Another occasion, always greatly en-ioyed by G. A. A. members and their mothers, took place this year on May 28th. This was the annual Mothers' and Daughters' Banquet. The G. A. A. had another doughnut sale this year in order to raise money for new equipment. The girls who proved themselves to be the best saleswomen were Betty Gorman, YYinona Smith, and Marjorie Schwebke. The Senior Girls won the championship for volleyball this year and also the final basketball game, which was played for the first time in the new community building. Serving as a memory book, the Belvi presents pictures and records of school activities. The staff members are chosen by the faculty in the spring so work for the book may be begun immediately after school begins in the fall. As in past years, the engraving was done this year by the Pontiac Engraving Company of Chicago and the printing by the Rogers Printing Company of Dixon. Besides having a neu. adviser, the kind of type was changed. Formerly, the paper was printed at ihe newspaper ofiice. However, due to the large expense of printing, it was decided to use a mimeographing process this year. Thus the start' memlaers are alile to try their own ideas and experiments. ln order to luuy new equip- ment, the Hel-Hi News sells chocolate milk daily and sponsored the annual Variety Show.
