This fall, in answer to a long-expressed demand of the student body, a student council was organized at the high school. The purposes of the council are to serve as a medium between the faculty and the students, to advise ways and means by which Belvidere High School may be made a better school, and to direct student activity in general. Because the Booster Club would conflict with the council in the carrying out of the above ideals, and because the council was considered to be a more democratic and a more truly representative organization, it was deemed necessary to abolish the Booster Club. The former members, however, were incorporated in the council during their whole school attendance. Besides these members, the council consists of a representative from each home room. This student is selected by the home room because of outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship, good citizenship, and willingness to serve the school. The council has been divided into four committees, and in spite of the fact that in most high schools it is generally agreed that three or four years are necessary for a council to learn to work smoothly, our council has made marked progress. The Program Committee, under the sponsorship of Miss Blackburn, has arranged at least one program a month for the student-body. Outstanding among these were the Christmas Vesper, the Russian baritone, Seraiim StrelkoH', and VVashing- ton's First Defeat. The Social Committee, directed by Miss Burton, arranged the social schedule for the year, including class parties. Special parties sponsored by the council were the Harvest Mixer in October, the Homecoming Dance, and the Christmas Hop. The Athletic Committee, under the guidance of Miss Fulker- son, supported the athletic department. They sponsored ticket sales, arranged pep assemblies, bought megaphones for cheerleaders, and feted the players with a football and a basketball banquet. The Finance Committee, guided by Mr. McAllister, handled all' the money for the organization. They also had the responsibility of approving all of the money-raising activities of the classes during the school year. In addition, they raised money by selling pencils with basketball schedules on them and basketball pins. The big project of the year, on which all committees worked together, was the Booster Carnival. 47 THE 1939 BELVI Raw One-J. Belvi- dere won five games, lost two, and tied one. The season opened on September twenty-third when Belvidere defeated Crystal Lake on the home field by a score of 6-0. The following week the heavies outfought the hard-hitting team of Men- dota by a 12-6 count. In this game Stan Reiman, aided by fine blocking, returned two punts for Belvidere's total score. On October seventh, the best Belvidere could do was to tie the DeKalb 'KBarbs. This game at DeKalb looked doubtful for Belvidere until Reiman got loose in the last twenty seconds of play to tie the score. The next week was one of disappointment: the heavies were beaten by a two-point safety in the last quarter of play by Dixon. Smarting from that defeat, Belvidere had little trouble in downing Marengo. On October twenty- eight came one of the most exciting games of the year for Belvidere. The heavies were beaten 18-13, but not until their final rally was stopped by Freeport on the one yard line. A small break could easily have given the team this game. On November fifth Belvidere traveled to Sterling to win its last conference game 12-6. Belvidere recovered from a first-half slump to score two touchdowns in the second half. In the final game of the year, Belvidere came through with a 20-0 victory at Harvard-ending a very successful season. The heavyweight team was outstanding in speed, blocking, and running. There was not a game lost that could not have been won by a small break. The lightweight football team came through a hard-fought season with flying colors. They lost but one game, tied two and won five. They started out with a decisive 19-0 victory over the Crystal Lake ponies. Following this victory, they trampled over the Mendotians 26-0 in their first conference game. The following week they traveled to DeKalb to win a very hard battle, 7-6. Bill Grady's interception of a DeKalb pass was the ponies' only touchdown. On October Hfteenth they held a big Dixon team to a 6-6 draw, then came back the next week to an impressive 40-2 victory over Marengo. Traveling to Freeport on October twenty-eighth, the ponies received their first and only setback of the season, 7-0. In the last conference game at Sterling the lights were held to a 6-6 tie, even though they outgained and outfought their opponents. On November eleventh, the lightweights ended their season in fine shape with another impressive victory at Harvard. The lightweight team ended the season in a tie for first place honors in the conference standings. The heavyweights reached only a tie for second place with DeKalb in conference standings, due to the two point setback by Dixon and the 6-6 tie at DeKalb. The lightweights contained some very young and good material. The freshman class turned out two running mates of outstanding ability-Craig and Beck. Considering the fine material coming up, and also the number of returning heavyweight lettermen, we sincerely believe that some great teams should appear in the next few years at Belvidere. From the heavyweight team, Graff, S. Kiester, Reiman, and Houden were chosen on the all-conference team. Kiester and Houden also received honorable mention on the all-state team. QUAD This year's heavyweight team consisted of many experienced men held over from last year and a few lightweight lettermen of the year before. The team had some remarkable qualities. They had spirit, poise, courage, and determination. They were very well trained, both physically and mentally. The team finished first in the North Central Conference bringing the first North Central Conference title to Belvidere in many years. The team finished second in the sectional tournament being defeated by Rockford who later won the state championship. Belvidere High played a total of twenty-nine games this season, winning 23 and losing 6. They lost to Dixon on the home floor 26-25. Then the team went to the DeKalb tournament during the Christmas holidays, and after winning their first two games, they were defeated by the powerful Glenbard team. Glenbard later won the tournament. The team lost two more games to Mooseheart and Harlem during the regular season. At the regional tournament, Belvidere defeated South Beloit and VVinnebago easily. As a result they met Rockford in the finals. it was a nip and tuck battle with Rockford edging out a 39-37 victory. In the sectional Belvidere's first game was Dixon, Belvidere's old rival-. Belvidere defeated them in an overtime game which was packed with thrills from beginning to end. Their next game was Mt. Morris who fell before Belvidere 35-18. Rock- ford had won their bracket so Belvidere and Rockford met in the finals again. Belvidere was defeated 34-19. LIGHTWEIGHT SQUAD Coach Bill Craig was faced with many inexperienced men at the beginning of the season, however, they came along fast and by the end of the season had an amazing record. They won seventeen out of nineteen games and tied for the lightweight conference championship with Dixon. The lightweight teams in the last two years have had a wonderful record-having won all but three games in two years. It looks as though Belvidere is going to have another good team next year with all these lightweights coming up. They have plenty of spirit and determination to go along with heightg and once a team like these lightweights 60 THE 1939 BELVI Raw One-LINCOLN, CRAIG, BUKER, FUNDERBURG, WRIGHT. RICHARD HOUDEN 'KDick was a very fine defensive man and a con- sistent rebounder. The team missed him very much at the Rockford tourna- ment. FRANK RUL1soN Pidge was probably the best defensive man Belvidere had. Pidge', played his best game at Harlem. 62 DONALDIWOODS Don has the distinction of being the only man to play heavyweight ball all four years. He has been high scorer two years in a I'OW.
