BELVI STAFF Since the members of the 1938 Belvi staff Were chosen by the faculty at the close of the 1937 school year, Work was started on the book shortly after school opened in September of the current year. The subscription drive was held early in October and four hundred and twenty five students placed orders for year books. Mr. lVlcClary took all the individual and group picturesg the greater part of this Work was done in October and November so that the pictures could be sent to the engraver by the middle of December. The plates Were made again this year by the Pontiac Engraving Company in Chicago. Mir. Mong of the high school faculty took most of the pictures in the snapshot section and all of the pictures used for our division pages. This year the Belvi contracted with a new printing firm, the Rogers Printing Company of Dixon. During the second semester the dummy was prepared and the book was sent to the printer early in April. BAUMGARTNER 1 Coach Assislanl Coach When the basketball season opened, our coaches, Mr. Craig and Mr. Baum- gartner, were handicapped by the lack of experienced men. Very quickly they developed a successful varsity squad with only two heavyweight lettermen and a few lightweight lettermen from the previous year. The team defeated the alumni in their first game 2I to 19. The regular season opened December fourth when our squad defeated Harlem 30-26 and the following night won from Crystal Lake 32-16. The next game was played with Rockford on the new armory fioor, where Rockford won 28-4. The next night our boys scored another victory when they played at Marengo. The sixth game was played at Kirkland where the locals were again the winners. The conference games began after Christmas, and the first was with Sterling when our squad lost their second game of the season. The following games brought victories to Belvidere: Dixon, Mooseheart, Harlem, Rochelle, and Kirkland, but -We lost the first engagement to DeKalb and also the last combat with Dixon. Then again Belvidere came to the front by winning from Marengo, Sterling, DeKalb, Sycamore, and Rochelle, but lost the last game of the season to lvlooseheart 29 to 30. Belvidere entered the regional tournament at Rockford where they won from Winnebago and South Beloit and advanced to the finals with Rockford. The Rabs won 41 to 29. The team lost their first sectional tournament game, to Dixon 29-24. The coaches were faced with an entirely inexperienced group for the light- weight squad. However, these boys developed into a championship team, losing but one game and sharing honors with Dixon for conference honors. The light- weights opened their schedule with two victories against Harlem and Crystal Lake on the home fioor. Next, was a very close victory in an exciting game against Rockford. The following night lhfarengo was swamped 36 to 5. A victory followed over Kirkland before their first conference victory taken from Sterling. Success followed at Dixon and with Mooseheart. After these games a close victory was taken from the Harlem squad. The ponies then journeyed to Rochelle, winning 26'-II. Victories followed from the games with Kirkland and DeKalb. The next week the team's only defeat was handed them by the Dixon squad with the same score by which our boys subdued them earlier in the season, 21-IQ. Marengo and Sterling both lost to us and the locals won their second game from the Barbs IQ to 18. The last three games of the season were victories over Sycamore, Rochelle, and Mooseheart. 58 BELV!-1938 HEAYYWEIGHT TEAM Rau- lfl.. XVOODS. D. YVOODS. KRAEMER, BLUNT. DAGUE. t Rau' 2-MR. CRAIG. Early in the year the girls sponsored a doughnut sale, and this was so successful that they hope to establish the sale as a yearly event. Over two hundred girls canvassed the town for orders, and they sold eight hundred dozen doughnuts. Brey's bakery did the baking, and the girls packed them in bags and made the deliveries. The freshman and sophomore girls beat the juniors and seniors in this contest. A party was given to the winners by the losers on the evening of November twenty-ninth in the high school. Nlany were present to enjoy the affair which began at seven o'clock and ended at nine thirty. Dancing and Hcootiel' furnished much entertainment for the girls. After the games lunch, which included sandwiches, hot chocolate, ice cream, and cookies, was served. The arrangements for the party were in the hands of the G. A. ACTIVITIES lylany varied activities are planned each year for the G. A. A. members by their instructor and adviser, Miss VVerth. Something new was introduced this year, since some of the girls taking archery made their own bows and arrows. This group includes the following girls: lXfIarguerite lNIcElroy, captain, Ruth VVheeler, Jean Harned, and Doris Feltz. Each week the girls gathered in the manual train- ing room and were instructed by lXfIr. Arthur Jaffries. Archery classes met each lNIonday morning at 7:30, and a number showed their interest by reporting each week. Others in this group, besides those mentioned above, included Betty Rulison, Janace Schindler, Virginia Lincoln, Mary Shackell, Eva Jukes, Molly Loop, Florence Rennie, Betty Wrate, and Ione Hammond. Other activities taken up by the girls either before school each day or during gym classes included tennis, tumbling, basket shooting, ball room dancing, ballet, and basketball. The basket shooting contest was held March tenth, and the basketball tournament was not held until after the Belvi Went to press. During the year seven new showers were installed in the girls., locker room, and each of the girls has a pair of shower shoes. These shoes were made by the manual training classes, and it is possible for the girls either to rent or buy these shoes. In order for the girls to keep track of their gym suits and shoes, each girl has been provided with a number which is placed on her suit and also on her shoes and other equipment. Before the class volleyball teams were organized, all the girls who could report to school early enough in the morning Cby seven-twentyj were put on teams. Each team had a captain, and the captain drew a number which gave her team its initial position for the ladder tournament. The object of the tournament was for each team to climb as high as possible on the ladder in the four weeks' time allowed for the tournament. Any team had the privilege of challeng- ing the team immediately above, and if they won, they moved up one rung on the ladder. This competition proved very exciting for the groups. The class volleyball tournament was held on Thursday night, January twen- 65 BELVI-1938 SNOOKY OLIVE ? ? ? tieth, and the largest crowd that ever witnessed a volleyball tournament in Belvi- dere High School came to see these exciting games. A percentage was made of the winning games, and it was found that the seniors won with 75013, the juniors and sophomores tied with 601727. The freshmen gave each of the other classes real competition, and they have three more years to even their score. The referees for the games were Marjorie jane Davey and Marion McCallum. Scorekeepers were Ruby Lindvall and Sarah Weiner. lVlary Louise jordan was the timekeeper, and the linesrnen were Neva and Nelva Flemming. On Monday evening, january thirty-first, the senior class Volleyball team played a team made up of Poplar Grove and Caledonia girls who are now attending Belvidere High School. Also, an all-star high school team played an alumni group made up of girls who were graduated from our school within the last four years. The results of these games are given below. The Poplar Grove and Caledonia teams were composed of the following girls: Lois Anderson, Captain, Lucille Burton, Lucille Griflis, Evelyn Mae johnson, Ruby Lovell, Marian Mariett, Lucille Pavlak, Arline Peterson, and Doris VVinne.
