SOCIAL COMMITTEE Katherine Conde, ChClil'llItl7I Owen Hutchinson Robert Vandewalker Beth Sisson Winifred Smith l Gaius Barr Barbara Buker 33 BOOK TWO REVIEW OF THE FOOTBALL SEASON The 1936 football season began on the night of September eighteenth when Polo came to Belvidere and was defeated by the Purple and Gold, 60-0. A week later the Belvidere teams journeyed to Harvard and won by another large score, 43-6. The Q'lights, playing their first game of the season, won 21-0. The following Friday night Belvidere began their conference season by winning at DeKalb, 7-0. The DeKalb lightweights won the first game 14-0. Two weeks later, in a field of mud and in a steady drizzle, Dixon came to Belvidere and gave the B. H. S. heavies their first and only defeat, 7-0. Dixon won the lightweight game by the same score. To avenge this defeat the Purple and Gold, in the following weeks, won from Rochelle, 32-Og Marc-ngo, 13-Og Sterling, 14-75 and Mendota, 13-0. The Rochelle and Marengo games were played at night and all but the Sterling game were played at Belvidere. The lightweights won from the first of the four foes, 12-0, 46-0, 7-6, but lost the final game to Mendota 6-3. In the whole season, the heavyweights scored 208 points and had their own goal crossed only three times. It was the most successful football season for Belvidere High School in years, and much credit is due coach Baumgartner, his assistants, and each and every member of the team. He contributed a lot to strength- en Belvidere's line. Richard Houden Fullback, Halfback Dick could always be depended upon to block thc opposing ends. Jack Lanning Guard Jack was one of the fast- est men on the squad and no doubt one of the best foot- ball players B.H.S. has ever had. He received honorable mention on the all-state team. Richard Blunt End i'Rich , a junior, likes to play the gameg and besides being a good pass receiver, he is a constant threat to all opposing ubacksf' Eugene Barr Quarterback You could always depend on Gene', to pick up sev- eral yards on a reverse. William Dague Fullback, H alfback Bill made many gains through the line although he was one of the lightest players on the team. Lloyd Houden Fullbaclz. Morris and Mendota games and lost the Rockford and Harlem games. The Mt. Morris and Mendota games were played on the home floor. At the DeKalb Invitational Tournament, the Purple and Gold were eliminated by the defending champions, West Aurora, in the first round. After the holidays the conference games began in earnest, and Belvidere lost the next four games: DeKalb, Sterling, Rochelle, and Dixon. Belvidere, although losing, put up a good fight and gave the spectators their money's worth. The Rochelle game was lost in an overtime period. On February fifth, B. H. S. defeated Mendota again, but the following two games were lost to DeKalb and Sterling by close scores. Next Belvidere won over Harlem, who had defeated us earlier in the season. Return games with Rochelle and Rockford followed, and Belvidere lost both by close scores. After the tournament, in which Belvidere was eliminated by Pecatonica, 31-30, Dixon came to Belvidere and lost in the final game of the season, 19-16. While the heavyweights won only five out of seventeen games, the lightweights enjoyed a much more successful season, winning eleven of their fifteen games. The lightweights played a fine brand of basketball, and their showing predicts a brilliant season for next year. 41 Belvidere Belvidere Lower Row: Blunt, Lanning, Funderburg, Laing, Byram.
