I ,A 'N -.2-we 1 One can scarcely dare hope, also, that any final word of advice will gli 33 X' be any more heeded now than during the past four years, just because it . X Q X is included in the class yearbook. Nevertheless, I sincerely congratulate the Class of '56 on its X B achievement of one important step toward success in our society -- the high school diploma, Much has been said recently about the economic value of a high school education. It is truly becoming more and more of a necessity, but, because of the greater number of students involved, and the concept of a high school education for all who are able and willing to take advantage of it, the student who would seek real knowledge, and whose desire for information has only been sharpened by high school, must look to further education to help him find his rightful place and greatest success. Think of high school graduation as only your first step, and of these words of James D. Freeman: A hill is not too hard to climb Taken one step at a time. One step is not too much to take, One try is not too much to make. One step, one try, one song, one smile, Will shortly stretch into a mile. And everything worth while was done By small steps taken one by one. To reach the goal you started for, Take one step more -- take one step more! is 77'2a,Az1Mf00 SCHOOL BOARD i LAVINA STEHLIK, Clerk C. O. An orientation booklet giving information about organizations, rules, and curriculum, was completed. This booklet will be distributed among all freshmen and new students. A code of ethics was drawn up by the council after a number of student-parent-teacher meetings which indicated interest in the subject. It was patterned, in part, after codes which had proved satisfactor in other schools, and included items pertaining specifically to Belt High School. The codfe has been included in the orientation booklet. Student Council also sponsored a Religious Emphasis Day which was received with enthusiasm by the entire student body. Guest speakers for the day were Rev. George Harper and Father Arbanas. The local pastors, Rev. Starlin and Father Whalen were also present. The first session of the afternoon was a general session with addresses by both of the guest speakers. Students were then permitted to choose a section which they wished to attend---Catholic, Protestant, ora group discus sing reli ion and family living. The remainder of the time was spent in these discussion groups and viewing a film presenting a problem in ethics. ST UDENT COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Each year a number of students receive recognition for meritorious work. Most of the awards are made at an Awards Assembly, this year held in conjunction with Class Night, and at the Commencement Exercises. American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a delegate to Girls'State, held now on the Montana State College campus in Bozeman. Mildred Porter was selected as delegate with Shirley Warehime as the alternate. The Masons and the Eastern Stars sponsor the delegate to the American Legion Boys' State held on the campus of Western College of Education in Dillon. This year's delegate was Michael Welsh with Bob Dawson as alternate. Elizabeth Darko, with Kenny Maki as alternate, was designated to attend the Junior Red Cross Camp at Kalispell. Heisey Award winners were James Veleber, freshmang Richard Smiley and Joanne Hendrickson, sophomores: Michael Welsh, juniorg and Jerry Stober, senior. Marvin Koskela received the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company award of a bronze plaque for outstanding work in science. Phyllis Johnson, as editor of the school paper, received the MIEA certificate of award in journalism. Jacquie Koontz was awarded the State University System Honor Scholarship, and Jerry Stober a music scholarship from Washington State College. 33 u., OFFICFRS: M.
