Y NJ Zi of SENIOR PLAY The Hottentot a comedy in three acts written by Victor Mapes, given by the Senior Class, Friday, April 9, wa-s a success, entertainingly and financially. The parts were well played and the play afforded real enjoyment to the audience. The story was centered around the Hottentolt, a horse of amazing swiftness and fierceness. A-lex Fairfax is desirous of entering the Hottenltolt in a steeplechase, but can find no on-e to ride- him. Peggy Fairfax has previously met Sam Harrington in California, and has confused him with .Sam Harrington the great jockey. Har- rington had been in an accident and as a result, fears and hates horses. He comes from California two weeks before the steeplechaise to see Peggy. She, believing him to be the great rider, asks him to ride her horse, Bountiful, in the steeplechase. This Harrington promises to do. The day before the race, Swift, the butler who has conceived a great liking for Harrington, hides Peggy's honse so Harrin-gfton need not ride in the race. Harrington immledialtely purchases fthe Hottentot, gives him to Peggy, and promises to ride him in the race for her. The race is run, Harring- ton riding the Hottentot, wins and wins Peggy as well. The parts of Sam Harrington and Peggy Fairfax were well played by Gerald Crumrine and Vern Abercrombie. Swift, the butler, as played by Lowell Treaster, was a typical butler, and evoked much laughter from the audience. Max Hamilton played the rolle of Larry Crawford, showing his ability as an actor. Mariali-ce Robb, as Mrs Chadwick, exvtricated herself from several amusing situa- tions, much to the delight of the audience. ' The remainder of the cast was: Ollie- Gilford, Harold Hill, Mrs. Gilford, Beatrice I-lillebrandg Alex Fairfax, Duane Ross, Perkins, the gnoom, Manley Stilleyg Captain Reginald Townsend, Gene Watersg Miszs IMc-Kessfon, Kathryn Wilson. Much of the credit for the success of the play is due to the coaching of Miss Quaintance, who worked hard and deserves the appreciation of the Senior Class for her efforts. ffx f MQ. Cos- tuming and stage settings were attractive and the music was delightful. Neita Hen- derson and Kenneth Crei-tz assumed the leading roles admirably and were supported by an excellent cast. The scene of the story is laid in modern Spain at the time of the Festival of Toreadors. Margarita de Montero, a beautiful Spanish girl is betrothed by am- bitious parents to an unscrupulous Spanish nobleman whom she does not love. She is loved by a young American who is in Spain in the interests of his government. Plans for the wedding proceed in spite of Margaritas protests, but on the wedding day as the bridal party are on their way to the cathedral, the American arrives with proofs of the nobleman's iniquities. The nobleman releases Margarita from her engagement and the young American gains the conse:nt of Margarita's parents to marry her. THE STUDENT COUNCIL In 1924 the movement for a representative student council was started. After consideiable investigation and planning the faculty offered a plan whereby closer co-operation between the student body and the faculty on all student affairs could be brought about. This plan provided that each of the four classes should elect two representatives. A presidesnt, to be a member of the Senior class, was to be elected bythe stud-ent body as a whole. Also, each organization was to elect a representative. This plan was adopted and has proved to be a successful one. At the first meeting in 1926 the election of officers was held. Wayne Ewing had been elected president by the students. The 'Council proceeded to elect Bernese Smith, secretary and Dorothy Butler. treasurer. One of the first problems was the electioun of a cheer-leader. This led to the election of Max Hamilt-on as head cheer-leader. The Student Council promptly took the name of Pepper Shakers and sponsored Mads Merrymakersw as an enter- tainment committee to officiate at events such as basket ball and football games. Many other problems came up. Among them the selling of tickets to the games, and other .problems of lesser importance. . I Then came the school tacky day and picnic. The details of these -events were han-dled by the Student 1Council and the day turned out very successfully. This brief review shows the success of the Student 'Council in B. H. S., for it has developed high standards 'of democracy, service amd loyalty. .J 9, . '?fF?f,11zTiL-:Q so - Svnniur Ullman 13112111 We would like to tread the halls of B. H. It proved to be successful in a financial way, and was pronounced by many to have been one of the most attractive ever offered here. The outstanding number was a popular New York play, The Climax, which was greatly enjoyed. The Continental Four, a male quartet, provided an enjoyable program consisting of songs of the Revolutionary period Cin costumej as well as songs of a more recent period. A t'Health Lecture by Dr. Sadler was both entertaining and educa- tional. The Snyder-Haig Company presented a high grade recital program in a manner that won the approval of everyone in the audience. A. L. Flude in a ''Round-the-World Lecture thoroughly charmed, en- tertained, and instructed his hearers. The Parkinson Ensemble Artists, consisting of violinist, cellist, and pianist, greatly pleased all who heard them. The Cleveland Symphony Quartet, a highly artistic group including violinist, cellist, flutist, and harpist, presented an Evolution of Music program that contrasted the popular music of sixty years or more ago with that of today. L CLASS HISTORY And it came to pass that we, the Class of 1926, with the distinction of being the first class to occupy the new Junior High rooms, entered upon the t'Green Age one hundred and seventeen strong. But even as it was written, the verdure soon completely vanished and we took up our abode in the land of Knowledge, unmolested. Our teachers and principal spoke unto us and we were compelled to follow many hazing rules and endure many hardships. We took counsel among ourselves a11d chose our leaders for that time, which we were to remain in the Green Age. They were Ralph Johns-on, president, Edwin Shurtz, vice-president, Harold Hill, treasurer and Nila Cooke, secretary. VVe chose as our motto, Venemus, vidimus, vencimusf' Our class colors were green and white, and our class flower, white carnation and fern. Fear not for our accomplishments were many in this Green Age. Our chapel program was said to be the best ever given. Marguerite Eustace was sent as a delegate to the State G. R. Convention. Behold! Even as it was written we entered upon the Brass Age and n-o longer were we considered green. 'Our Class Officers Were: Harold Hill, president, Orin Jordan, vice-president, Beatrice Hillebrand, treasurer and Marguerite Eustace, secretary. We elected Kathryn Wilson and Lowell Treaster as our representatives to the Student Council. In that age al- though weighed down with the struggles of studies and books, We contrib- uted a large number of people to the various activities. Our football team and basket ball and track teams were much strengthened by our support. Also we made merry with our class Hallowe'en party in the gym. Now, it so happened that after spending nine short months in the Brass Age we were promoted to the Age of Reason. For our officers we chose Harold Hill, president, Ralph Johnson, vice-president, Duane Ross, treasurer, and Nila Cooke, secretary, Kathryn Wilson and Lowell Treaster again acted as our representatives to the Student Council. This year we were represented by thirteen members in the orchestra, over half of the total orchestra. Gur Junior play, Daddy Long Legs was an immense success. Our banquet for the Seniors was one of the best ever. VVe, the Tribe of the Age of Reason, did not remain so forever, for we soon passed into the Golden Age. Dear Senior Sponsors of '26: By making an investigating committee -of myself I have through police records, newspapers, court proceedings and various other places, including gossip, located practically all members of our class of 1926. As I know you would be interested in what your former pupil-s are doing, I am sending this investigation to each one of you. Harold Hill, our former class president, has achieved great success as an artist. His latest and most noted production is that of a barn near Asherville. Duane Ross, our honorable vice-president, is head of a large millinery department in the east which is known as the Clarice. His creations are much in demand. The only thing he created in school was disturbance. Nila Cooke, -our old secretary, has won a great reputation as a beauty doctor. She has just perfected a Hurry-Up Tan Lotion, guaranteed to produce an Abyssinian complexion instantly. Very popular with armchair travellers and dry land swimmers. Vern Abercrombie, the great singer, is now in the midst of a big damage suit. She was singing in Chili and caught cold. Kathryn VVilson is studying Greek at Ashervilleq Her purpose is to discover the original vamping recipes of Helen of Troy. Gerald Fletcher is in Hollywood with the movies. He is known as 'tThe World's most perfect lover. Gerald Crumrine is also a lawyer. He is trying Vern Abercr-ombie's dam- age suit case. He usually does try her cases. Beatrice Hillebrand is now a noted authoress. No doubt y-ou have read her latest and most popular book, which is biographical in nature, entitled, 'tHusbands I have Shot and Missedfi Marion Gould, prominent school athlete, runs a garlic garden near Glen Elder. We always knew he would lg-o in for ,something strong. Margaret.Fulton has a good job with the Heinz Co.,-57 varieties, which takes great mathematical ability. She counts the warts -on all the pickles in the packing room. Russell Kennedy is now an osteopath. He claims his path to the grave is just as short, painful and costly as any other.
