Brewer, who has unselfishly served on the Board of Education for twenty-eight years, and whose kindly interest has inspired the students of Beloit High School to higher service, We the class of '25, affec- tionately dedicate the Orange and Black . 1 Eomlce All suicic, YI 1925 ? H. S. The improvement of our school has been steady ever since the Beloit School District, Number Two, was organized in 1870, the same year in which Mitchell county was organized. For several years school was conducted in a building which stood ion the present site of the Union National Bank. Here 0. N. Fletcher, who was a Baptist minister, taught school and conducted church services. Later, W. A. Reeder, a former congressman from this district, taught for two or three years in this same building. Mr. Reeder claims the distinction of being the only man in Kansas who ever dis- missed school that the older boys might aid in chasing from the town site a herd of buffalo. This he did in 1872 when a herd of wild buffalo was reported to be entering the village at about thexsame place where Beloit High school stands to- day. Three buffalo were killed that day on the townsite. A few years after this a brick school house was built a little to the south of where our present building stands. Due to the crumbling of the brick, this building was .soon con- demned and wrecked. In 1879 the school was organized as a High School Dis- trict. W. H. Burke was chairman of the board and W. H. Thomas was the first superintendent. He received a salary of S100 a month, while the grade teachers received 330. In 1884, twenty thousand dollars in bonds were voted to build the old high school building which in 1918 was destroyed by fire. The first class graduated from B. H. S.-the class of '83 -consisted of two members, Miss Long and Miss Barnes. The second class, which was graduated in 1884 had ten members. Miss Bauman, the superintendent, said in her report, The exercises as a whole were a credit to our school and places our educational advantages second to no city in the Northwest. From that time until the present day our school has grown and developed. In 19114 the board found it necessary to build an addition to the old building in order to better care for the ever increasing student body. On September 21, 1918, that building was entirely destroyed by fire. Immediately the school board set about to prepare for the erection of the new 'building-our own B. H. S. of which we are all so proud. During the time of the erection of the new building: school was held in the churches and various other centrally located buildings, and much to the -credit of those in authority, scarcely a day was missed. Today we are very proud .to say we are attending one of the most complete and best equipped High school build- ings in the state, Here's to our Alma Mater- The best school in the state. W'c love her, we revere her, adore her. . May she overcome any fate. F. L. S. , ,,. 4 i925 V Lmm.,5 M' A i DR- E- E- BREWER, M. D. DR. F. B. KINCAID, D. D. S. R. L. HAMILTON, A. B., L. L. Oh, my! you missed one of the best entertainments ever given by the Beloit High school. ,Sit down and let me tell you something about it. A Miss Haynes, musical director, coached the operetta and chose the following cast: Ting Ling, Chinese Princess --- .... --- Sylvia Wray Ah Me, Ting Ling's cousin .... .......... E lsie Gaston Wang, Ting Ling's uncle .... --- -- -- --- Edgar Barger Star Eye, court astrologer .................... Royal 'Clanin Fanchong, leader of the Crimson Eyebrows --- Warren Finch Neptune, Wamg's accomplice .................. Manley Stilley Buddha, in love with Wang --- .... Lucille Prewett I-ling Lee, Fanchong's spy .....,,...,.. Q ........ James Dean The story of the operetta was made up of tangling threads woven about a, Chinese maiden, Ting Ling, rightful' owner WHEN A FELLER NEEDS A FRIEND Hey, FBill, where yuh been? Where have I been? Man, you don't mean to tell me you missed it? Missed what? Why the Senior iplay. Gee, my sides ache from laughing. Why, I wouldn't 'have missed it for anything. Well, come on tell me about it. Well, I shouldn't, but it's too good to keep. i Tom Denker iEdgar Bargerl receives letters .from both his aunt and uncle fElizabeth Lutziand Donald Ewartl stat- ing that they are coming to visit him, supposing from his let- ters that he is financially well fixed and-married. In real- ity he is not married and he and his pal Bob Mills fRoyal Claninl are almost destitute, ILiz,,jthe landl-ady's daughter, CElizabeth Butlerl is finally induced to take the part of his wife and the landlady fFrances Shookl finally consents to let them use the house. Another friend, Jerry Simith, tPorter McKinnieJ is elected cook and the force is ready to face the of the Chinese throne, and Fanchong, leader of the Crimson Eyebrows. Ting Ling's uncle, Wang, 1tries to gain possess-ion of the throne, and in order to do so plays upon Ting Ling's imagination, telling her that Neptune was onceher lover in another world and that he is again -coming to claim her. In the meantime Ting -Ling meets Fanchong' and believing him to be Neptune immediately falls in love with him. Wang pre- sents many difficult problems to solve, making the play ex- citing. At last Ting Ling -and-Fanchong are united and Wang is disgraced, but allowed to live because of the mercy of the fair Ting Ling. The humor brought into the play by the conversations of Wang, Buddha, and Star Eye 'made the audience roar, and then Ting Ling's sweet voice would hush them to an attentive silence. H. L. H. frelafrves-. ' 'E 3 I E The aunt and uncle are shocked by 'Liz's manners and Tom is mortified. The food is terrible 'and the landlady almost unbearable. Miss Lynne, a ward 'of Tom's aunt, fLucile Prewettl finds herself in a. trying ,position when she meets the Bob Millsgwhose name s-he h-as chosen as rher fake hus- band's. Angela fBob's fiancee, Josephine Wancel distrusts Bob believing him to be married. A The thing which .helps most. in straightening out the tangled affair is a magic rug., Anyone standing on it could not keep from telling the truth and in this way one by one the fibs were untanvgled and the couples were joined- together in fa pleasing manner. In years past this oc- casion has always been so formal as to seem uncomfortable so the Seniors tried to do away with some of this formality which proved very successful. The decorations in the halls were in the Junior class col- ors-green and white-quite convenient for a St. Patrick's program. The program given in the auditorium consisted of read- ings by Annabelle Finney and Josephine V-anceg a jig by Ida Mehl, Anna Annan and Alice Guardg solos by Dorothea An- derson, Warren Finch, R-oyal Clanin, and a musical reading by Edgar Burger. A chorus composed of Helen Lathrop, Eliza- beth Lutz, Alice Guard, Rosemary Lutz, Josephine Vance Eliza.- beth Butler, Frances Shook, Dorothea Anderson, Edith James, T-helma Lindenmier, Charles Wyatt, Warren Finch, Royal Clan- in, Edgar Berger, Gerald Van-Pel-t, and Donald Ew'art gave some lively Irish songs and dances. Refreshments were served in the hall by a committee of Freshman girls. Green and white ice cream and cake car- ried out the color scheme, This reception marked the beginning of the end for the class of '25. The original suggestion for the festival came from C. O. Smith, superintendent of the city -schools, and received such hearty support and created so much enthusiasm that extensive preparations were made for the ev-ent which was financed and cared for by the Beloit Chamber of Commerce. The entire community entered into the spirit ot' the oc- casion and many weird and unusual costumes were seen, The carnival consisted of three partsl-a parade, a stunt program down town, and a general frolic winding up in a big dan-ce. The October night was ideal for such an occasion and the af- fair was a great success judging from the number of specta- tors lining the streets. The program was in charge of the Beloit city schools and each of the teachers was in charge of a stunt. Some of the community organizations also participated. The programs were amusing and there was ample variety to ikleep- everyone interested.
