■ To you, MRS. EVELYN G. HORNSEY, we, the members of the graduating class, dedicate this 1957 Yearbook Your methods of teaching English, stimulating to the point of being inspiring, have endeared you to class after class of Belmont High School seniors. Freedom of thought and broadening of cultural horizons have been stimulated and nurtured under your constant guidance 3nd counsel. The fragments of wit and humor injected in each day's class will long be remembered as a unique facet of your nature. May we extend to you our deepest appreciation for giving of yourself so generously in our behalf, for your fine assistance with our graduation exercises, and for the strength and richness of your English course. Mrs. Hornsey, we thank you! m TO THE CLASS OF 1957: 1 am happy to extend my personal greetings to every individual in this excellent class. The fact that you have accomplished your objective and are to graduate from our High School in June 1957, makes me happy. On the other hand, the realization that you are about to terminate your direct and active association with our schools makes me sad. In spite of these mixed feelings, however, I want to assure every member of the class that he has my best wishes for continued success and happiness. Sincerely yours, CHARLES R THIBADEAU Superintendent of Schools The realization that your immediate goal has been achieved should now provide you with encouragement to seek additional goals to challenge your abilities. The individual who can shoulder his share of the burden is the one whose work, for its merit, is respected and admired. A high sense of values, integrity, purposefulness and respect for others arc essential in all fields of successful endeavor. You will profit by evaluating the past, and appraising the present in planning for the future. Best wishes, success, and happiness to one and all. GEORGE HIGGINBOTTOM Principal LESLIE W. CROWSON TO THE CLASS OF 1957: You are leaving Belmont Senior High School for the last time and this brings to a close your formal public school life. However, life is essentially made up of beginnings, not endings. You are about to apply the knowledge you have gained to experiences which in this changing world will begin anew each day. You will begin learning new ideas and methods and begin applying them to new materials for the beginning of new products and services as you carry on your life work. To meet the challenge of this changing pattern successfully we must be emotionally stable, intellectually alert, physically active, and morally honest. Remember your happiness and success in life depends directly on your recognition of and adherence to the truth. Congratulations and best wishes to you all — LESLIE W. CROWSON, Director Belmont Vocational High School And Qladly Teach . . . A y r? ' •' yi 7-:i The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life” Plato We, as seniors of Belmont High School, arc indebted to the members of our faculty for the cooperation and guidance extended to us for the past three years. Their counsel has nourished the seeds of our adolescence to maturity and has shared in making our graduation possible. Our welfare and education have been their prime concern, and the)' have worked unceasingly to provide us with knowledge for later life. Bookworm's, and French Clubs Our High School Days On a bright day in September of 1954, we Sophomores scurried to school eager to become students of Belmont Senior High School. The various wings, the corridors, the stairways, the rooms, and the people all seemed to unite for one purpose, to confuse the new sophomores. In January of 1955, we had our first Sophomore Class meeting at which our adviser, Mr. MaeBain, was introduced to us. Numerous petitions were soon circulated among the students for nominations for class officers. After short speeches were given by each of the candidates, the primaries were held, and then the final election. The results were impatiently being awaited when we heard on the public address system, Elected as Sophomore Class Officers are: Billy Stoneman, President; Sam Smith, Vice- President; Paula Whitney, Secretary; Jimmy Skahan, Treasurer. Now that our Class was somewhat organized, we were ready to sponsor a dance. In April, the Spring Shuffle with Bob Donahue’s orchestra was presented. It was a big success, both for the class and for those who attended. In June we ended our sophomore year with a big splash at Nantasket. We cruised down the harbor on the Boston Belle and spent a hot but wonderful day on the beach. Despite the fact that we looked like broiled lobsters, we returned home treasuring the memories of our first high school beach party. In November of our Junior year, various types of class rings were on display in the showcase in front of the Office. Orders were taken as students looking like a throng of buzzing bees swarmed about the poor salesman. Again, when the orders had been filled, the salesman bravely returned to distribute the rings. Everyone was a satisfied and proud wearer! In November once more, we heard talk and plans of dances to be presented by our class. On December third, Winter Wiggle with Jack Panjian's Orchestra was given. We had a marvelous time especially watching Mr. MaeBain trying in vain to keep those boys away from the decorations. In February we sponsored another dance — the Heart Throb.” Dave Kales and Bennett Zarren were great, spinning the records for everyone’s good time. Shortly after this dance, the several committees for the Junior-Senior Prom began work. The months of planning finally ended when the decorations were in place, and everything was ready for the big night on Saturday, the nineteenth of May. Springtime in Paris” was gorgeous. The favors were silver chains with hearts initialed with B’s”; the refreshments were delicious; the orchestra was very well chosen. Even boys of the Sophomore class helped out by serving as French waiters wearing berets. This Junior-Senior Prom was a great success! The most exhausting event of the year was our Junior class mountain climb up Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. Upon arrival at the foot of the mountain, we adventurous souls ate our lunches, and then eagerly began the long hike. Some abandoned the group shortly after it started; some straggled behind the unit; others tramped up the mountain at a steady pace; and still others raced ahead to be Belmont High’s conquerors of Mt. Monadnock. Remember ? Although our traditional beach party was held on a cold and rainy day in June, our spirits were not dampened and a good time was had by all who went to Wingaersheek Beach. When we started school in 1956, we became the Seniors, the officers of the many clubs, the editors and staff members of the Star and Blueprint. We were very fortunate to have Helga Reimann with us for our senior year. She was the exchange student from Germany whose sparkle added so much to the class. In October plans were again made for a dance — Autumn Action” with Eddie Freedman and Bennett Zarren as disc jockeys. In November our smash-hit Senior Play was presented. Time Out For Ginger” was the story of a father’s wish for his younger daughter to be a lady” like her older sisters. But she proved to be the star player of the high school football team. The cast of this hit play did a wonderful job. The annual Belmontian Formal or the Silver Slipper Ball” was a night to remember. The beautiful decorations, the entertainment, refreshments, and orchestra all helped to make it a most successful evening. Throughout the year we saw our fellow students on the football field, the track, the soccer field, the basketball court, the hockey ring, the girls’ hockey field, and on the baseball and softball diamonds. Remember the excitement of the Tech Tourney? Remember the rallies, especially the boys' cheering section helping to build school spirit to support our many teams? Climaxing the winter sports season was the hilarious basketball game and dance. The football team played the hockey team. Who were the adorable and peppy cheerleaders? As the year came to a close we attended the Senior Banquet, the Class Day, and then the Boosters Banquet at which Senior letter winners were awarded jackets. Awards Day and Letter Day were also thrilling, as awards were given to those who had made outstanding records scholastically and athletically. Before we realized it, graduation had arrived. While we waited nervously to receive our diplomas, we remembered our first experience at high school — the hours of hard work — the moments of fun. It hardly seemed possible that our secondary school education was over. Belmont High’s effort to discipline our minds and develop our characters through study had been completed. We are now graduates! Paula Whitney, Secretary. E. Harian C. Sakakeeny D. Hubbcll S. Gordon R. Lcvenson COOKS Left to right: Mrs. burnock, Mrs. Union. Charades were the order of the day at the Christmas meeting where all later joined in the singing of French carols — carefully enunciating all the hard words.” A student from Boston College favored us by speaking to the group in French about life in French Canada. The first meeting consisted of the annual installation ceremony. The club enjoyed Bill Stone-man's enthusiastic report and viewed his slides taken while summering in Italy in 1956. In December, an original play written by Edward Clark (concerning the Roman’s attitude toward the birth of Christ) was presented by four club members. In a humorous vein, the club was privileged to see a preview of Ovid s Pyramus and Thisbe taken from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. The yearly Alumni meeting gave a fine opportunity for advanced Latin students to meet returning graduates who shared valuable collegiate experiences with present high school students. The new project of the year was one to provide clothing and other necessities for a Navajo teenager in Arizona. Albanese Home Economics Club Any one of the ninety-eight members of the Home Economics Club can tell you that this is a practical and informative club. It's lots of fun, too! The purpose of this club is to promote understanding and interest in home economics and its related fields, and the Club presented a variety of programs and activities for its members. For the first meeting, Mrs. Dole from the Katherine Gibbs School spoke on the subject of manners and dress in business, and the techniques of an interview. 'Home Economics in Industry” was discussed by Miss Burns from the New England Dairy Council, and films concerning good grooming and nutrition were also presented in the course of the year. This year as a special Christmas project, the girls baked holiday cookies for different hospitals. Surely this is symbolic of the good things accomplished by the members of this club. Student Council Democracy in Action” is the slogan of the Student Council, because through this group pupils lend support to the morale of the student body. This representative body, composed of one member from each home room, furnished the series of excellent assemblies ranging from one which took us out of this world in an explanation of the planets to another which recalled to us the humor in various dialects in this country. When we saw Belmont High School beanies and pins around, we knew that the Student Council had sponsored another successful project. Recuperation” was what we all needed after mid-year exams, and thanks to. the Student Council it was provided in the form of a lively hop. Our appreciation goes to Mr. Kolouch for his assistance and interest in the Student Council. STUDENT COUNCIL Front Row (left to right): D. Stoncman. D. Devine, S. Shelton (Sec.). K. From elections to panel discussions — Should the United States Commit Itself to Foreign Aid was the topic discussed by the junior members of the club. In March, the long awaited Massachusetts Student Exchange Day 1957 with Revere arrived, and in a special assembly prepared to familiarize our guests with the Town government, our own student body also learned about the Warrant and the Town Meeting. Two hundred fifty Junior and Senior girls who met the requirements set by the Club constituted its membership. Early in the year, the Senior members were privileged to enjoy a talk given by Dr. Bettencourt concerning his collection of unusual nut- crackers. Everyone was dressed in her best as two generations gathered for the annual Belmontian Mother and Daughter Tea. After this tic the Belmont team was determined to win the next game against Brookline, and surged to a 3-0 win. Then Belmont met Malden and outplayed them, winning 2-0 on goals by Lee Kennedy. The next game was disappointing, for Belmont had the lead all the way until the last few minutes when Lexington emerged with a burst of strength and managed to break Belmont's defense to score a goal, thus tying the game as time ran out. The following two games against Arlington and Winchester were rough for Belmon and the squad was defeated 1-3 and 0-3, respectively. The final game of the season was against Concord and ended in a 1-1 tic, with Barbara Carroll scoring Belmont's only goal. Liz Borland, co-captain, played a rugged game with many hard drives and great defensive plays. CROSS COUNTRY Front Row (left to right): D. Kales, J. Dwyer, G. Gordon, R. Costello (Capt.), P. First, one of the best runners Belmont has ever had, Red” Costello, broke his ankle. Then the team was shut out (failed to place in the first five) by Newton. Entering their second straight meet without Captain Costello, the harriers suffered their second straight defeat, this time at the hands of Melrose. With O'Leary, Dwyer, Teagan, and Mercer finishing 2, 3, 4, 3, Belmont dumped Arlington 241 -301 2- Despite the fine running of Brian O’Leary, Belmont fell before a mighty Watertown team. At the district meet held at Brandcis University, O’Leary finished seventh among all of the runners from six different schools. At the Middlesex meet held at Tufts, Belmont finished twelfth out of seventeen participating schools. O'Leary again proved his worth by finishing eleventh among the 230 entrants. John Dwyer finished fifteenth out of roughly 130 participants in the State meet held at Franklin Park. Belmont as a team finished fifth in Class B. SOCCER Front Row (left to right): E. Semerjian. X'. The club dropped its first five games before defeating Governor Dummer 2-1. In this tilt, Paul DiNapoli and Doug Loomer tallied the scores. Co-captain Ron Fine played his customary outstanding game. The boys lost to Medford, Exeter, Watertown, Browne Nichols, and Phillips Andover, previous to the Governor Dummer game. They bowed to Medford and Watertown again before Coach Solano switched his outstanding player, Ron Fine, to the line. In the first game at his new position, Fine rammed home two goals to lead Belmont to a 2-1 win over Belmont Hill. In the next game, Ron repeated his performance, enabling Belmont to tie the Tufts Freshmen 3-3. Injuries hampered the booters throughout the season. Co-captain Dave Zibbell sprained his ankle after but four games. He was out for the remainder of the year. Kevin Bratton suffered a broken-collar bone late in the season. Ed Freedman injured a leg. Co-captain Ron Fine deserves special credit for his fine play as fullback, goalie, and inside. Next year’s captains, Kevin Bratton and Paul DiNapoli will have a strong squad with which to work. After a month of hard practice, Belmont met its first rival, Lexington. From the very first whistle, Belmont took command with superb shooting, enabling the team to breeze to a 42-29 victory. The next game was disappointing, for Belmont, lacking the drive shown at Lexington, was defeated 29-31 by Arlington. Inspired to do better, Belmont went to Cambridge High and Latin the following week and played a stupendous game. Barbara Carroll really outdid herself by scoring a total of 24 points. The next game against Melrose was also highly successful, as Belmont romped to a 46-19 victory with Barbara scoring 22 points and Ann Cain scoring 13 points. Then at Concord Belmont played a very exciting game, with a nip and tuck score all the way. Lee Kennedy and Gerry Laslccr came through in the last quarter to boost the score to a 39 31 win for Belmont. The last game of the season was against a highly skilled Winchester squad. Belmont went to Winchester hoping to cause an upset, but Winchester, having other ideas, took possession of the ball from the very beginning and walked away with a 43-31 victory. These games could not have been played without the support of the guards, for at all times they were alert and ready to receive the rebounds. Their fine defensive plays enabled Belmont to remain well ahead of their opponents. The season wound up with 4 wins and 2 losses. This may be attributed to the fine coaching of Miss Cleary and the enthusiasm each girl put into every game. FOOTBALL From Row (left to right): M. Portentoso, L. Ramirez. J. O'Connor, R. McAvoy, R. Starting with a bang, the Frinkmen accumulated two wins and a tic in their first three games. They slipped past Lexington 2-0 in a squeaker. Next they held a powerful Reading squad to only six points while earning that many themselves. Melrose fell before them the following Saturday, 13-6. The tables were turned on the next four weekends as the Belmontians bowed before Wakefield, Cambridge Latin, Concord, and Winchester. Two of those games were really close and with a little luck could have resulted in Belmont victories. The freezing weather at Stoneham hampered Bender Crisafulli in no way. He scored twenty points as the dub broke back into the win column 26-19. Belmont lost on Thanksgiving Day to its traditional rival. Water-town, 21-6. The boys played surprisingly well against a team which outweighed them roughly fifty pound' per man in the line. Coach Stone Coach Frink Coach MaeBain H. It will be many a year before anyone forgets their spectacular performance at the Tech Tourney, when the Garden lights were lowered and Sally twirled her glowing fire baton. For every occasion these girls originated clever routines which they skillfully demonstrated. Nine peppy figures, jumping and gleefully yelling, guess who they were — the cheerleaders! Show some spirit, make some noise,” was their cry as they led the girls and boys in cheering the teams on to victory. Belmont and Winchester, each having 13 1 records in league play, tied for the Middlesex League championship. They reached the finals of the Tech Tourney after tripping St. Mary's of Brookline 40-39 and edging Winchester 54-43, but stumbled before a taller Natick quintet. The starting five consisted of co-captains Greg Loser and Sam Smith, Dawes Hamilt, Bill Stoneman, and Doug Devine. The key to the club’s success may be found in their great back-court men, Greg Loser and Dawes Hamilt. Greg finished the season as their leading scorer. He tallied a record 34 points in one game. Dawes was .the chief playmaker and second high scorer. He and Devine shared rebound honors. The highlights of the season were the two victories over arch-rival Winchester. With the play-offs came disaster. In the Arlington game, our fabulous captain, Kenny Gardiner received a severe head injur)’ which ended his hockey playing for the season. The locals fought hard but bowed to Arlington and Newton. The Belmont spirit could not be broken. Playing a game of desire, they tied Melrose 1-1. Others starting on the varsity were: Joe Vcnuti, Bob Hughes, and Jo Watson. Hughes and Watson were Sophomores and appear to be able to be of service to the team for three years. As a lead off man, Leofanti was excellent. Fine and Hamilt supplied the power. Kadchjian and Watson were steady hitters. The infield was perhaps the best in the league, defensively. The pitching staff, led by big Dawes Hamilt was adequate. Backed up by a strong bench, the team was the most powerful in years. Spring Track The Belmont High School Track Team had another successful campaign under coach Mel Wenner. With Co-captains Wilkins and Crisafulli leading the way, the locals were pretty solid in all events. Tony Creonte and John Crisafulli were standout dash men.
