Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1955 volume:

BELMONT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, BELMONT. MASSACHUSETTS . . . adventures in living are recaptured and framed through the medium of words and pictures. Friends made, knowledge acquired, interesjts broadened — all are among the fruit- ful crop planted and harvested here. These memories of our enriching years will be for- ever cherished. Did you realize that our school can easily be compared to a business, one in which all co-operate so that each will obtain the best possible profits. We ll show you. Here, as in a business, we have: Executives, Senior Personnel, Day and Night Shifts, and Sports. The success of our organization depends upon the unselfish contributions of all of its members. n Hi, folks! B-Boy’s the name. I ' m one of your class- mates. I’m here to give you the inside story of my life at B. H. S. — the great times, the wonderful people. All sct. Let ' s go!” Vfpsm . I . .... i . L. - ' 1 1.-.V - ■■ 13; K • L mtk sincere appreciation • • • to c iHiss Josephine f5 iary Calderara For the unselfish service you have ren- dered, the 1955 Blueprint honors you with this tribute. We dedicate our yearbook to you, not only because of your encouragement and added assistance to us in your field of mathematics, but also because of your counsel and co-operation toward making the Belmontian Club as influential as it now is. May future years reward you with the fruition of your hopes, a fitting reward for one who has contributed thirty-two years of enthusiasm and effort to Belmont High School. .t. t And gladly would ' she’ learn, and gladly teach” — ■ Chaucer “Q ' U bsqm nuf aLoJu bif inthodwdnxj. thst ' best in ihe biUtinsiAA ' Aiding Advising TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF ’55: One of the great attributes exemplified by Americans is a spirit of confidence, a kind of ingenuity which faces and masters the impossible. Our farms are producing far more today that our forefathers ever dared to anticipate. Our echnical know-how has brought respect and leader- ship throughout the world. In all of the progress and development of our great land, the concepts that all men are created equal and that they have an equal opportunity to achieve, have been foremost in our educational training. Money itself is not a true measure of success, but wealth in character, loyalty, fair play, consideration for others, and initiative attest to the greatness of respect of each and every one. Set your goals, be diligent in your efforts, treasure your character, and your life will be truly rewarding. A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. Mr. George Higginbottom — Proverps PRINCIPAL Mr. George Higginbottom Principal OA 9 Me them pwm dcuf io daif Supervising TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF ’55: In retrospect, it has been a short three years since you first joined the high school community. Here you have met many situations in which experience has shown the main tenets for success to be integrity, industry, and co- operation. You are about to project your aims and efforts into a larger community. Success in this area can be assured when you continue with these prime attributes: industry, co-operation, and integrity. Meldon Wenner Mr. Mel Wenner has been working in Belmont High School for twenty-five years, most of which have been spent as gym teacher, and coach of basketball, soccer, and track. During this time, his basketball team has never once been poor, and he has brought his club into the Tech Tournament eleven times, winning in 1948. His track teams have always been the best in the state and have never failed to bring home honors. With their fine passing and accurate goal scoring, the varsity team chalked up a great victory against Winchester. They defeated our foes 2-0, not only for the first time in four years, but also for their only victory of the season. Many sophomores and juniors will be back next year with a promising team. The new coach, Mr. Galt, was well satisfied with the aggressive play and fine spirit. Their best game was a 5-1 victory over Water- town. The team, led by Captain Bob Butler, played their hearts out in every game, but the lack of si2e and depth handicapped them all season. A new addition to this year’s coaching staff was Bob Frink who took over backfield duties. It did not take him long to win over the hearts of the boys, and he gave them every bit of his knowledge to help out in any way his new charges. This squad was one of the highest scoring units in Belmont history and averaged 67 points per game. The scoring leader was Captain Ned Larkin who set a new school record with 432 points. While the team was often unable to match their opponents in size, they were never lacking in spirit and sportsmanship. A Middlesex League record of 9 wins and 5 losses was good enough for second place Jionors. The Wen- nermen were the only Class B team to really give unde- feated Winchester a scare. I Champs, runner-up for the State Title, and contender for the New England crown. It, was, perhaps, Belmont’s greatest hockey team since the days when George Ford and company ruled the Arena roost. The Bennett-men were one of the few teams in G. B. I. history to go through the league undefeated. The team played real, hard, fast hockey all season and never once were they caught napping. Some of the highlites of the season were the great 7-2 victory over Melrose, the 1-1 tie with Melrose to give them the G. B. I. crown, Ted Crowley’s goal a game tournament pace before he broke his arm against Walpole, and Gerry Howell’s two goals in two minutes to send them into overtime against Hamden.
