% 9 4 ' « •« • %so. 71 jOU Jjd Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime. And, departing, leave behind us AfiV left or will leave our footprints — in our homes, in our com- munity, at Belmont High School — in classrooms, clubs, and sports — even though we never have our pedal contours immortalized in bronze or stone with a flowery inscription. There are other ways, more lasting although not so obvious, of leaving mementos of ourselves in this world. Impressions we have made upon people in everyday life will live forever in memories, unwritten but permanent. ,, % f, y view j e unf ' tcjettalle imytint winch j tc has male in r atj 4 .ietvice at if ) e Intent j -lnjh c S cl col . . . MISS M. LOUISE DORNTEE teacher and friend whose ability, sincerity, and sense of humor have won the respect and love of all. As the founding sponsor of the Spanish and German Clubs and as a foreign language teacher for many years, she has made an indelible contribution to the enrichment of the social and scholastic life of our school. May the future bring added satisfaction and happiness to her life. William Bettencourt Mildred Blennerhassett Verna B. Ames 4 Josephine M. Calderara The BLUE PRINT honors those teachers who have given twenty- five of the best years of their lives to our school system. Elizabeth A. Gould David C. Jacobs Miriam Loring Ralph Libby Marion B. Steuerwald The fall of the school year has a singular effect on seniors, for it means a more realistic approach to immediate goals. The problem of what to do follow- ing graduation is most significant and meaningful. In retrospect, friends have been an essential part of high school days and experiences in the extra curri- cular activities have added some enrich- ment to school life. The future will reveal that friends, activities, a good sense of values, and a sound religious faith are essential to happiness and success. As the Blueprint” reflects your indi- vidual and collective accomplishments, so too, it will leave significant and selec- tive footprints for those who will follow. George Higginbottom Mr. George Higginbottom PRINCIPAL tie jpetMnal utlance ant To the Class of 1954: This Yearbook will be a keepsake of and a testimonial to the fact that you have expended the time and effort necessary to complete your high school training. In so doing you have individually and collectively left your imprint on the school and upon those who will be continuing here. You are embarking upon challenging seas of larger scope which will offer many oppor- tunities for a full life. Your individual efforts to mould a constructive imprint in this broader area call for an aggressive application of the cardinal virtues of faith, determination, cour- age, and intelligence. This will sometimes be difficult. However, you can perhaps take comfort from a view credited to Victor Hugo — There is one power mightier than that of armies. It is an idea whose time has come. H. S. We entrust to you the maintenance of Belmont ' s reputation in good scholarship. It is in your hands to promote the fine bal- ance between scholastic and extra-curricular activities both by doing your best in the excellent, well-instructed courses, and by upholding inherited traditions, such as outstanding musi- cal performances, beautiful proms, and good sportsmanship. To maintain ' ' method in your madness, we leave you guid- ance both vocational and educational, under Mr. Higginbottom, Mr. Kolouch, Mr. Crowson, Mr. Nagle, and Miss Anderson. Last, but not least, we endow you with the opportunity for a bigger and better BLUEPRINT! JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left to right: Edward Larkin (Treasurer), George Smith (Secretary), George Higginbot- tom (Vice President) Seated: Richard Murphy (President) TO THE CLASS OF ' 54: As you read this message, you have reached a milestone in your life and now belong to that august body known as the alumni of B. H. S. We do trust that you have taken with you many pleasant memories and that you have formed lasting friendships among your associ- ates of the past three years. The time is now at hand when you are face to face with the challenge of life, whether it be the business world or continued study, and I with the members of the Junior Qass extend to each and everyone of you our sincere wishes for a life filled with success and happiness. DAVID J. O ' CONNOR Junior Class Adviser David J. O ' Connor TO THE CLASS OF ' 54: Your graduation is the completion of another stage in your development. Graduation means that you successfully finish a prescribed academic course thereby bringing to an end your high school days; and the familiar class routine, as well as many of your class-mates, become things of the past. But Graduation is also called Commence- ment. Thus do you end one stage of your de- velopment only to begin, or Commence, what we all feel will be a greater and more glorious one. In wishing you continued happiness and suc- cess, the Class of 1956 hopes that its progress through high school emulates yours as a fitting example for succeeding classes. LUCIEN A. To aid in the physical development of its youth, Belmont offers a wealth of diversified Sports Activities which fill the school year from fall to spring. Excellent coaches and abundant team material have produced winning teams this year as in the past: Bennett ' s Hockey Team — the G. B. I. Champs, and the Wenner ' s Winners — again qualifying for the Tech Tourney. With spirited and talented support ably provided by the Cheer- leaders, Belmont ' s teams have this year brought enjoyment and unforgettable moments to their loyal supporters. A most vivid example of team spirit was shown in the Ded- ham game. After trailing 19 to 0 at the half, the inspired team went on to score four successive touchdowns and beat Dedham 27 to 19. Bob Wilkins ' run of seventy yards for a touchdown in the Winchester game proved to be the long- est Belmont run of the season, closely rivaled by Bob Butler ' s 50 yards for a touchdown in the same game. Under the captaincy of Joe Lombardo and Clarence DeSarno, Belmont ' s fine Soccer team rolled along with a record ot two wins, three ties, and four losses. Felix Pardo as high scorer made three goals for the season. Usual competition comes from college freshmen or prep school boys; only one game was lost to a high school team. With a win record of over 65 percent, the team qualified for the Tech Tourney where they whipped Milton and Newburyport to advance to the semi-finals.
