Belmont nineteen-fifty-three yearbook Belmont High School, Belmont, Mass. Mrs. Melissa Howarth dedication RIENDLINESS and understanding charac- f terize this teacher who has extended her helping hands to many struggling students. She has given generously of her time and put great effort into her years of service at Belmont High School. It is with deep gratitude and sincere appreciation that the Class of 1953 dedicates its Year- book to Mrs. Howarth. in memoriam THOMAS P. JOYCE December 8, 1903 - August 26, 1952 Teacher of electricity in Belmont Vocational High School, inspirer and leader of youth, worthy associate and esteemed friend Mr. George Higginbottom principal ' s message HE success which characterizes your present achievement now places you on the road traveled by countless others before you. You are faced with similar detours, blind- spots, and other factors to challenge your goal as useful and productive citizens. The progress, happi- ness and success of your journey will depend upon your reasoning powers, consideration for others, a good sense of values, and your enthusiasm to accept and discharge responsibilities entrusted to you. More- over, you may draw upon the past for inspiration, and appraise the present and meet the future with deter- mination, faith and understanding. May you find the satisfaction of life in work well done, in service to others and in continued growth in knowledge and understanding of human affairs. Shoulder your responsibilities, accept your joys and your adversities with patience, with indomitable cour- age, and sterling character, and follow the highway to a successful future. vocational director Mr. Crowson Expert instruction offered . . . Mr. Crowson ' s Message O NCE again a vocational class has arrived at the point of departure from High School into life in the broader fields of trade and in- dustry. You who are graduating with this class have a firm foundation on which to build a solid, successful future. To realize this success, one ingredient is essential above all else. You must be able to think and think clearly. Many ideas will be presented for your evaluation. In think- ing them through, if you can separate truth from error, and then pattern your actions after the truth, happiness and success will follow. May we extend our sincere congratula- tions and best wishes to you all. faculty Ames Blennerhasset -., 0 ' Clish Howarth Jacobs Boudreau Corrigan Anderson DiPoli Bridey Cowing Bettencourt Dorntee Kearney Kolouch Lisbeth Libby Lincoln McBain Loring McCloskey Magee Meyers Nagle Noreen --- O’Conner Roberts Seaman Orton Richmond Shipp Smith T. The 1953 Blueprint Mr. Brule Ella Swartz Mr. Lincoln senior class officers Jim Buckley, Senior Class President As we hear the nostalgic strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” at one of the greatest events in our young lives, we realize that we are ac- tually leaving Belmont High. Many scenes pass before our eyes recalling three wonderful years spent here and the friendly, helpful people with whom we met and worked. We sincerely ap- preciate the guiding hands of Mr. Higginbottom, not only our principal, but our friend; Mr. Kolouch, Miss Anderson, and Mr. Nagle. Praise is due also to those behind the scenes: the office staff, the kitchen staff, and the janitors. Our class is truly grateful to have had Miss Cleary walking beside us in everything we have under- taken, as an advisor and inspiring supporter. Along with our memories of fun, we find we have grown up — no longer bewildered sophomores, but now stately seniors, looking ahead to our places in the world. seniors Helenjean Addison 87 Bartlett Avenue Ambition: Newspaper Work Pet Peeve: Third lunch Student Council 3; Belmontian Club 2, 3; Dramatic Club 1, 2, 3; Latin Club 1, 2 (Vestal) 3; Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Music Club 2, 3; Choir 2, 3; Red Cross Club 2, 3; Publication Club 2, 3 (Business Manager); Forum Club 2, 3; Belmont Herald Re- porter 3; French Club 3; Cap and Gown Committee 3; Na- tional Honor Society 3. The first period Chem class leaves the lab to all future cookbook chemists. Ginny Murray leaves her blonde hair to Nancy Lee Johnson. Margie Sherman leaves the Glee Club piano to Carolyn Whitford. Jimmy Polese leaves the hurdles to any grasshopper. Annaliese Jutte leaves the memory of her charm with all of us. The Vocs leave Mrs. Nugent a tool box to help her run the P- A. Dave Hurley leaves Mr. Cowing to Jack Flynn. Camille Cell leaves her jolly exuberance to Andrea Kazanjian. Warren Farrell leaves his bashfulness to anyone who wants it. Dick Hurley leaves the hope of another great basketball season with Rich Nelson, Ralph Gifford leaves his treasurer’s books and empty pockets to John Rooney. Ursula Reidy leaves her sparkling smile to Carol Simpson. The cheerleaders leave the thrill of the Tech Tourney to next year’s cheerleaders. Jim Buckley leaves his all-round good humor to anyone who’s feel- ing low. The females in Physics leave Mr. Libby a class of boys. Don Yaceshyn leaves his brains to prospective N.H.S. members. The Bluenotes leave B.H.S. for television, maybe? Jeff Freeman leaves the “jinx” problem to the subsequent editor- in-chief. Branson McKay leaves his racing forms to any avid fan. Nancy Fisher leaves her beauty to Anne Freeman. Marie Scarfo leaves her cute outfits to Carolyn Fantasia. Miriam Turran leaves her giggles to anyone who enjoys the happier side of life, Nancy Colby leaves her fabulous parties to another loyal sports’ supporter. Bob Edgerton leaves anyone of his instruments (he could afford to leave five!). Eleanor Jones leaves her sweet disposition as an example to us all. Martha Dixon leaves her red pencil to next year’s literary editor. Bill Kerr leaves his tennis racket to future champions. French “fourites” leave their language to industrious students. We regretfully leave Miss Cleary to her gym classes. Thus are left a few of the many treasures the Class of 1953 pos- sesses. Behind the scenes . . . around school V sports soccer M 1 ITH relatively few varsity members returning, Belmont High’s Soccer team i I ended their season with a record of four victories and five defeats, f f Highlights of the season were victories over Watertown, five to noth- ing and six to one; over Belmont Hill, two to nothing; and over Tufts freshmen, two to nothing. BHS suffered two heartbreaking defeats at the hands of their rival, Medford. They played excellent defensive ball, holding the opposition to an average of 1.7 goals per game. Outstanding players were the captains Richard Mixer and Pau lJurigian, who played brilliant soccer; and Jim Polese, who led the scoring with seven goals for the season. Coach Wenner turned out a fine team that was recognized for its spirit and good sportsmanship. Potential dynamite . . . FIRST ROW: L. Tirrell, E. Collier, L. McElroy, K. Heanue, J. Lasker, R. Coach Roberts, J met by an inexperienced squad, did an excellent job on all counts, although the seasons record of no wins and eight defeats certainly is not indicative of the team’s ability. Injuries to Warren Farrell and Dick Brosnan before the season’s schedule opened, and later to Jim Buckley and “Bobo” Carlo, plus numerous sprained ankles and pulled muscles, hurt the team. Norm Purdy, “Bear” Agahigian, “Cheesy” Maciver, Tom McBride, John Rooney, and “Red” O’Connor, acted as captains during the season, though at the close of the schedule, the squad elected Norm Purdy their official captain. Credit is due to the entire team, for they practiced long hours and played well in every game. FIRST ROW: D. Yaceshyn, R. Comeau, J. Cairns (Co-Captain), F. Mac Nulty, (Co-Captain), P. DiNapoli, D. M ENNER ha(J another winner, and the Belmont basketball fans roaring again. The ’53 team, after opening the season I f with smashing victories over Waltham, Newton, and Brook- line, their Class A rivals, continued in the win column and swept through the Middlesex League. With both fans and hoopsters at fever pitch, Belmont rolled over their arch rivals, Winchester — 43 to 40. This thriller put BHS ahead one game in the league race, but Winchester and Belmont became deadlocked, when we tumbled to defeat in the Read- ing Gym. Belmont’s “Fire House Five’’ again broke into the lead, as they trimmed Winchester for the second time 50 to 43. Wakefield posted the biggest upset of the season when, in the last league game, they stopped Belmont 56 to 53, and plunged the Middlesex League into a tie for top honors. The regular season games showed Belmont and Winchester each with 12 to 2 records, and both teams were invited to compete in the an- nual Tech Tourney. In the first game of this classic Belmont fashioned a 31 to 16 margin at the half and coasted 57 to 46 over the Winthrop quin- tet. The second game found us matched with Winchester, whom we had twice beaten, but who finally came out on top of a see-saw battle not only for a place in the finals, but also for the league championship. Winchester led at the half, however. Coach Wenner’s team began to click in the second period and played magnificent basketball to tie up the score. Only three seconds remained as Winchester pulled ahead and won indecisively 50 to 48. Coach Wenner Captain Hurley The backbone of the team was Captain Dick Hurley- He was high scorer with “Soupy” Campbell running a close second. Paul Jurigian, with his amazing dribbling ability, was the mainstay of the defense. The other regular members of our terrific team were Raoul Piche, Jim Polese, Rich Nelson, and Charlie DiGiovanni. Of value assistance were the follow- ing reserve men: Doug Dewar, Dave Hurley, Willy Kerr, Tom McBride, and Don Yaceshyn. At an assembly in November, ten new members were inducted into the National Honor Society, and in April more students were elected to membership, but were received informal- ly. Six of the members in March, took the rigid National Honor Society Scholarship Examination. Cuided by Mr. Meyers, the Honor Society proved outstand- ing throughout the year, according to their creed of scholarship, leadership, character, an(l service. I.Q. — plus, plus . The pre- game performance saluted both teams with their respective letters, and then turned the greeting into “Hi”. The drum majorettes executed many difficult routines, but attained their climax with colorful flag twirling. Unusual formations greeted the stands during half time — a banjo, revolving wagon-wheel, a jack o’lantern, which smiled and frowned, and even Ru- dolph, the red-nosed reindeer. A concert band appeared two weeks after football season, ready to take part in the an- nual Christmas Concert.
