At last our initial day as Seniors arrived, and once again into assembly we marched to the front rows of distinction. On the follow- ing day Miss Southall must have become suspicious of the talkers, for she rearranged our seats alphabetically with you, Linda, to watch over us. Can you remember the excitement on the second Tuesday when our beautiful Senior Rings finally arrived? That's one 3:23 none of us will ever forget. For a week we went around exhibiting our rings. With September the football season arrived. The varsity cheer- leaders from our Senior Class led a pep assembly for the first game the following Saturday. That day our team played host to Pleasant- ville-disastrously, but also on that day the newly formed Refreshment Committee, headed by George Hood, capitalized on the hunger of the on-lookers and netted the first S35 for our treasury. Its members were on the job for each succeeding game and, continuing through the basketball season, rolled up an impressive total. fThe Booster Pro- grams at the Rye-Bellows football game also aided our treasury.J Before Christmas we Seniors did a brisk business at selling cards and wrappings. In late September we elected our class officers, and chose Roland Santomenna, Ronald Barlow, Grace Bianca, and Charles Scherer, who have guided our affairs expertly. Remember the crowd that packed the gym that Friday October noontime? They came to back the football team and varsity cheer- leaders, whose idea it had been to hold a pep rally. The same enthusi- astic crowd mobbed the bon rally that night where the cheerleaders once more led everyone's favorite football yells and songs. Once again, on October ninth, we held one of those never-to-be- forgotten homeroom meetings, where we drew up plans for this year's Scraps and chose its editor, Sue Goyne. In the afternoon final try- outs for our Senior Play, Young April, were held and parts were assigned. From here until the opening night the cast worked labori- ously every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A During mid-October the Senior boys experienced their second child- hood as water pistols became the rage and the Senior Homeroom be- came hazardous. Later that month, we traveled to Lincoln Studios to have our gradu- ation pictures taken. The following weeks were ones of indecision as each Senior was compelled to make his choice of proofs. On Novem- ber 5 the Yearbook photographer came to snap all of the Bellows' classes and clubs, and everyone became a model of What the Well Dressed Student Will Wear. The big night arrived at last. After endless preparation and two full dress rehearsals, not without amusing flaws, the Class of '48 pre- sented its play, Young April, with excellent effect. Much acclaim x was won by the stage set and the stage crew, who were well rewarded for their long hours of hard work. What fun we had during rehearsals! With members of the cast sharing cookies and candy at each meeting, many a pound was acquired. None of us will ever forget Marilou and Audre's wonderful open-house. Still not tired, eight Bellows Seniors went down to Arnold Con- stable's the next day to model in behalf of their Alma Mater. After the group walked the store all day and campaigned for votes, Marilou carried off the laurels. At the end of football season, the Lions Club of Mamaroneck gave a luncheon to honor our team and coaches. Inspiring speeches included remarks by Dick Lawrence, captain of theteam of '47, The Senior cheerleaders had fun serving the guests. On December 10 the Senior Class diminished to a mere shadow of its regular self when the male clan took off to Mitchell Field with Mr. McAloon. They came back full of fascinating stories, especially the one about the 'fmile climb up to the Control Tower. Came December 19 and the last school day of the old year. We presented Miss Southall with a white jewelry box and a silver brace- let to start it off. That vacation will go down in history marked by the Blizzard of '47. The new year brought a most welcome gift to the cheerleaders, as their long awaited uniforms arrived. They were immediately worn at the first January game against Eastchester. Around January 14 our class got seriously down to work. Mr. McAloon gave us Aptitude Tests for two days. Punch those little holes for your answers we heard until we found ourselves doing just that in our dreams. From these Crystal Ball Inquiries each of us discovered his unsuspected abilities. Mid-january arrived and the Senior girls' gym class became fam- ous as Cliff Blanchard snapped informal shots while the girls per- formed various gymnastic feats. With january also came mid-years, but the proverb, Every cloud has a silver lining, certainly applied in this case, the silver lining being the grand feeling we experienced after they were over! Especially the five-day holiday that followed. It was an interesting experience having Sten Stromholm as our visitor from Sweden for a month. While staying at the homes of Bill Falk, Bill Kuntz and Roland Santomenna, he attended our classes. We learned many unusual things about Scandinavian countries as well as our own country seen through Sten's eyes. But space is limited, Linda, and, like our reunion, these reminis- cences must come to a reluctant close. Bellows '48 grid team was unable to engineer a single victory to grace its scorebook, but ac- complished something just as important when it was demonstrated that a Bellows team can take a terrific beating and still remain full of fight and spirit. Mentored by coaches Jack Fearon and Fred Wurzbacher, the team entered and played every game with all the esprit de corps of past Panther teams and provided an excellent training ground for athletes from which to build future Panther squads. Starting their season with a 27-O setback at the hands of the Pleasantville Panthers, the ill- fated Blue and Black gridsters had two more rough rides with Mamaroneck and Scarsdale. bowing 45-0 and 49-0 respectively, before hit- ting pay dirt for the first time. Then, sparked by Eddie Feldt's pitching arm, they entered an opposing end zone for the first time in a 28-6 M. Romani. Coach Wurzbacher. Third Row-E. Kayner, W. Cummings. W. Weissauer, L. Litchfield. T. Mayers, F. Vitetta. J. Trimarchi, W. Magrino, D. Dahlgren, W. Saunders. R. Keegan, W. Panaro, game with Edison Tech, which was closer than the score indicates. The following week saw them again suffer a shut out. This time the Harrison Huskies were on the long end of the 35-O count. Undaunted by this defeat, the Panthers bounced back the next Saturday to give the Rye Garnet a tough battle before losing 13-7 in the tightest game of the season. In the closing game the unlucky Panthers again took it on the chin. This time the East- chester Eagles provided the opposition to the tune of 24-O. Even in this last heartbreaking lcss. the famous Bellows spirit didn't waver as the squad displayed the high morale and sports- manship worthy of our athletic representatives. Though they lost, we have nothing to be ashamed of in that performance or in the performance of the entire season. -Q-4-,. ,- 'Xa-fy Fxrst Row H Harrlott T Walsh S Evangellsta W Block Coach Jack Hasley S Bonellx R Tallevn G ton R OConnell A Fasolo D Hackett E Feldt D As Scraps goes to press our pugnacrous bas ketball team has just swung 1nto the second half of our last season ln the S W I A C and IS smash mg 1ts way from early season setbacks to an excellent record A resoundlng 47 43 upset over Edison Tech marks our entry 1nto the latter half of league play and IS the first check the Techmen have received ln the race for the SWIAC crown It also avenges the earl1er 53 51 trxmmmg the Techmen handed the Panthers Most of the Blue and Black losses came m the lnltlal quarter of the season as the team dropped 1ts first four starts Besldes the Tech defeat setbacks were at the hands of Blessed Sacra ment m pre Chrlstmas play and one of the re versals went to Eastchester by 27 24 W n -1- ' Uv ,a Uv Anderson J Benedlct W Hodsdon Thlrd Row A Henne T Mayers F Vrtetta E Petrxe D Evangellsta The team came through wrth 1ts first vlctory on January 23 when they dumped Pleasantvllle 39 33 1n the bandbox Good fortune lasted as Rye bowed 50 37 but ended 1n a 40 33 defeat by the Harr1son Huskles Rxght now the Panthers are r1d1ng a five game streak wh1ch began February 9 wlth a 42 33 wm over Horace Greeley and has extend ed through two v1ctor1es 1n Scarsdale and Dobbs Ferry games and the defeat of EdlSOH Tech wh1ch marked the opemng of the second half of league play The future appears brlght for the Panthers and we are lookrng for them to make a b1g splash 1n the remammg SWIAC games and maybe even wln the Llttle Three Heres hopmgll rj I .. l ! Quinn, Mrs. E. Baer BEHIND THE SCENES Do you ever think about who should be thanked, even though reluctantly, for typing our exams? Or who tantalizes you with those odors of good food through the halls around mid-morning? How about the men who sweep up the bits of that torn-up note and clean the boards for the next dayls demonstrations? Don't forget the school doctor and the dentist who keep us all healthy. We are about to introduce officially these people who are perhaps taken too much for granted at Bellows. First of all, it is Mrs. Cuyler who makes you so hungry, during third period class, for she prepares the food in the cafeteria. Every day there is a wide variety of offerings from which to choose a well-balanced meal. Remember that delicious turkey dinner at Thanksgiving time! Oh, yes, you can thank CPD the hard-working secretaries for typing your exams. May we in- troduce Mrs. Quinn who, with Mrs. Baer, fol- lowed by Mrs. White, has been our cheerful and cooperative friend in the office. Among their personal services for us, these ladies keep up our record cards, maintain a general information bureau and return our lost property. Dr. William Barrett and Dr. David Grossbard maintain a high average of good health among the students by their periodic check-ups. They are assisted by Miss Dale, who is also ready to apply First Aid whenever it is necessary. Our harried maintenance men, Mr. Grainger, Mr. Kildare, Mr. Linehan, and Mr. Jarabin have the monotonous job of cleaning up after us. During vacation, while we are having fun and even teachers are relaxing, these men are still working. Haven't you always noticed how clean and polished school looks the first day after vacation?
