EDITORIA The Old Order Changeth Regardless of how definite and established customs become, there are bound to arise at some time or other occasions and circumstances which warrant a change. Such has been the case with the regular plan followed for the graduation ceremony. The new arrangement to be introduced this year is in the graduation program itself, following the trend of the times toward what is known as a Unified Theme Programf' Previously it has been the custom to have tl1e three prize winning senior essays given as speeches, but under this new system one central theme is decided upon, then each speaker builds his talk about some special phase or branch of that subject. In this way the attempt is being made really to vitalize the gradu- ation exercises and bring them up to date with the modern trend being followed by schools and colleges throughout the country. The subjects chosen by these diferent institutions are all those which will not only interest the students, but also may provide constructive criticism or advice which will prove to be a valuable aid to them as they enter into a business and social world, wl1icl1 to most will be new and practically unexplored. The very timely and all-important subject of vocations has been chosen for our theme this year. Four speakers have been selected from the upper third of the class, according to scholastic standing, and general attitude toward school, other students, and the faculty. It seems like a splendid plan, and it is the sincere desire of the whole Class of 1940 that it will prove to be a success that will grow in popularity as the years go by. Another innovation which has been suggested is that of changing Ivy Day to the last assembly period of the school year, rather than having a special afternoon set aside during graduation week. Because of previous arrangements it was found impossible to carry out this plan this year, but it is to be hoped that it may be worked out next year. In this way the whole student body would be present at the ceremony instead of the relatively small number of seniors who usually attend. If this new arrangement could be brought into effect as well as the new Unified Theme Programi' it seems as if the improvement and benefit to all concerned would be of outstanding importance to the school as a whole. if 41 if Appreciation THE MERCURY staff wishes to thank all those people and organizations who have helped in the past year to make our paper a success.
