SENIOR CLASS HISTORY By IVIARJORIE JUDD Class Historian Ship ahoyl The Class of 19-140 launches its ship at the port of Bellows Free Acad- emy. After presenting their grammar school diplomas as passports thc passengers and crew were allowed to go aboard. The unaccustomed rocking of the ship and tl1e unusual surroundings brought on some very bad cases of seasickness. Admiral Dickinson called a meeting of the boys and girls and suggested that they form an or- ganization. As a reszelt the freshmen elect- ed the following oflicr r-4: Ben Vail-Captain. Barbara Ann Mcfiarey-First Mate. Ruth Jarvis--Keeper of the Log and Purser. The first shipboard entertainment given in honor of the plebes was a Sophomore Reception. Soon afterwards thc Admiral and his lady sponsored a naval hop in order that the new crew might get better acquaint- ed. The first storms they had to brave were the mid-year examinations. The raging main proved too strong for a few of the valiant force who were drowned in places where the Sea of Education was too deep. The survivors worked diligently in hope of obtaining advancement in rank. Extra crew ricular activities included baseball, tennis, basketball, football, and hockey in which some of the freshmen participated. They competed in the Junior Jamboree but the judges failed to recognize a brilliant performance given by the talented plebes and awarded the cup to thc junior midship- men. Their Hrst furlough came in June, but before they were able to leave they were obliged to tackle a whale of a problem- finals. When they returned from their leave, they were promoted to the rank of sophomore midshipmen. The officers who represented them that year were: Gordon Lemnah-Captain. Virginia Ramos-First Mate. Katherine Sunderland-Keeper of the Log and Purser. Midshipman Jacobs-Member of the Executive Council. 5- 8 On this voyage it was their turn to give tl1e incoming plebes a reception. In order to raise money for this purpose they held a Good Time Mixer, which was very successful because of their unusual ability in putting on this kind of entertainment. They sailed through that term on the crest of the waves. Again the judges failed to give full credit for their superb per- formance in the Junior Jamboree. They selected the following Class offi- cers: VVilliam Gray-Captain, Kathleen Kember-First Mate. Virginia Ramos-Keeper of thc Log. Midshipman Maurice Denault-Mem- ber of Executive Council. Honor was bestowed on several of the junior class for their marked ability in journalism. They were: Managing Editor-Sam Vail. Associate Managing Editor-Gordon Lemnah. Headline Writer-YVilliam Gray. Feature VVriter-Ruth Jarvis. Reporters-Janet Royce, Virginia Bing- ham and Barbara Ann McGarey. Advertising Manager-Howard Sweeny. Assistant Advertising jamin Vail. Assistant Circulation bara Wvebb. Manager-Bem Manager-Bar On their third voyage they had acquired a certain dignity and self-confidence that was very becoming. Their greatest respon- sibility this year was Hnancing the Junior- Senior Prom held in honor of the depart- ing senior class who were about to drop an- chor. Finally after three attempts to gain the coveted trophy their tireless efforts were recognized, when they won the cup at the annual Junior Jamboree for their remarkable production, The Amateur Hour. The biggest event on the calendar of the ship was the Junior Prom which was a spec- tacular affair and praiseworthy. On the fourth voyage Graham Fogg was at the helm, and with the aid of the following officers: Thelma Jacobs, First l
