The Clowns took on members of Key Club, Varsity girls and boys, basketball teams and members of the faculty. The Harlem Clowns displayed fancy plays, amazing ball control and came out on top 58-36. The Poly- Sci club provided the, entertaining evening. The couples dancing were not serendaded by sleighbells, but by the sounds of Brotherhood . The setting and music made for a wonderful evening, which seemed to come to an end to quickly, but left happy memories in the minds of many. MAVCRS Singing Valentines As bars of Chuchi Face echoed through the halls of BHS, Singing Val- entines once again brought heart trembles and pink faces to those students receiving the mes- sages of love. The choir was under the direction of Mr. Tom Dustman, may he rest in peace. 19 WSF Week Winter Sports Festival Week was filled with many exciting activities. A pogo stick jumping contest, water balloon dodge, tricycle race and a pie throw were just a few of the entertaining activities enjoyed by the princesses and student body. The seven princesses were formally introduced in an assembly featuring a hula hoop contest be- tween classes. The climax of the week suitably came during the half-time of a very unusual basketball game with Norwalk when Suzanne Fernish was crowned the Winter sports Festi- val Queen of 1974 Suzanne, with escort Richard Munoz, shows surprise and then smiles radi- antly after being crowned the Winter Sports Festival Queen of 1974 King Ugly Man Aaron Moore King Crazy Legs Stan Weinberg 20 W.S.F. Court 1974 Queen Suzanne Fernish Princess Michelle Hatch Princess Jackie Weinberg Princess Connie Halls Princess Leah Julius Princess Luann Furusho Princess Erica Landsdown Lunchtime at B.H.S. With the addition of the stereo sys- tem, lunch-time became the Buccaneers favorite time of the day. Instead of cars crowding the parking lot to leave at lunch, students were crowding the grassy areas to try and find a spot to picnic”. Frisbee and football throwing along with arm wrestling were a few of the activities enjoyed by the students during the noon hour. Kick Back.. . Close Your Eyes. . . And Go to Sleep. .. Pickle Week The week of March 18 was Bell- flower Highs First pickle week. Many different things came from it such as Burt Pickle. The week also saw happy pickle lovers and frustrated pickle sellers. 'BURT PICKLE1 arrot' 5T Sadie Hawkins Sadie Hawkins this year brought back the good old days with an old fashioned picnic, three legged races, wheel barrel races and a peanut race. The evening was cele- brated with a real country shindig while everyone dressed in western garb. B. H. S. Carnival Once again Stark Sons brought BHS a wet and wild carnival. Shrieks of excite- ment, moans of oh I won another squirt gun , and cries to buy just one more red hot burrito could be heard over the noisy clamor of rides. Club, student and faculty participa- tion all added to the success of the March week-end. Prom Romantic Ports-o-Call in San Pedro was the setting for this year's Prom. Couples attending were able to stroll among the many shops in Ports-o-Call Vil- lage. The evening, which seem- ed to end too soon, was filled with merriment and laughter, and was an evening which will be long remembered. 28 Graduation Graduation brings a time of looking into our future, and a time of looking into our past. We look ahead with new expectations and new hopes for what is yet to come. We look behind us with sad smiles, on four years that seemed to never end, but then suddenly passed so quickly. As we leave, we think of what we have gained, and the many treasured memories of high school that we'll carry with us for the rest of our lives. 29 PEP SQUAD 1973-1974 30 Being on Pep Squad means a lot of sacrifice and work, which is exactly what the 73-74 squad represented. They thrilled the school with delightful skits, stunts and cheers. Even when the Buc teams were down, these girls kept the rest of the schools' spirit soaring. More students came to the pep rallies and assemblies than there had ever been in any other year. Because of the pride and spirit they showed for our school all year long, this 73-74 Pep Squad will be remembered for many years to come. 31 SENIORS 32 Senior Class Officers This year senior officers are: Pres. Karen Ferre; V. Pres. lim Martinez; Sec. Cathy Barnhart; Treas. Shelly Hatch; Sec, of Act. Brad Rodriguez; Sec. of Pub._ Jackie Weinberg; ICC Riip Mary-Morrison; House Rep Mary Kukiela; Sgt. at Arms Buzz Fabian. Together” would be the best word to describe the class of 74 as they combined their efforts to produce such memorable experiences as the Christmas Dance, Senior Ditch Day, Junior Senior Prom, candy cane and valentine sucker sales and much more. Only through such team spirit does a class win so many competi- tion yells, and Homecoming float awards. Their pride and dedication will be re- membered always at BHS. The team matured too late to be a factor in the tough San Gabriel Valley League race. Although everyone was disappointed in the Bucs' win- loss record, everyone was proud of how the Bucs KEPT COMING. By the end of the season, the Bucs were ready to play anyone. Expected to have a building year, the BHS Varsity Wrestlers surprised the League with an effort that almost gave them the League Title. Only losses in their final two dual matches to Paramount and Norwalk denied them their crown. Tire unexpected success was in part due to the great showing of fire squad's under- classmen who held 9 of the 13 Varsity positions. Great seasonal performances were turned in by Richard Okimoto who placed 4th in CIF pre- lims and Pat Devine who finished 5th in CIF and went on to wrestle in the state finals in Oakland Look for great things from the Buc wrestlers as they will be real contenders for next years' SGVL Title. They came with no experience, they came with much desire. If the class of '77 keeps at it, Coach Koch's wrestling team 3 years from now will destroy the league. Although the team win loss record was not as good as we hoped it might be, we feel that the wrestlers who came out this year experienced great gains in their personal knowledge about wrestling and realized different levels of physical growth. With continued participation by these dedicated young men, the Bellflower wrestling program will surely benefit and be greatly improved in future years. Even though this is a young team with only 2 seniors they are very confident of victory. With number one singles Paid Di Guillio and number one doubles Rocky Favorite and Mike Lamb and the great tennis ability of Dale and Daryl Gloudeman and such sophomores as Perry Di Guilio and Jay Hardgraves it looks like 12 in a row. The Tennis Club has been very active this year. They have sponsored and ran the third annual Mixed Doubles Tournament over a two week period and supported the Girl's and Boy's Tennis teams. This year they also sponsored and ran the annual Tcnnis-A-Thon for fund raising where each team played 100 games of tennis. The money was used to maintain the tennis courts and purchase new equipment. This year a new Ball Boy was purchased to serve as a pitching machine. They have also had two parties and hope to have the annual swimming party this spring. First Row. Bowlers get together during the second quarter at Clark Center. This year we had 16 teams with Cindy Nathan, Becky Gunwall and Rose Mary Timm, winding up in 1st place. Becuase the interest was so great, there wasn't enough time in the quarter to get a chance to play all the teams. The girls also liked it so much that they wanted to play another quarter, so for the first time, bowling has had 2 quarters instead of 1. This time there were also 16 teams. The first place position belongs to Kathy Smith, Tina Castillo and Carol Spears. Special thanks to Cindy Campeau for sponsoring this event. Archery With the thrashing of Bobby Riggs at the hands of Billie Jean King, the way was opened for women in other sports. This year's archery team competed against Norwalk and Excelsior — in schools whose teams were either coed or all male. Spikes and slams filled the air each Wednesday at extended lunch when twenty teams battled to the bloody finals. We opened our season at the Long Beach State Invita- tional and placed 39,40,41,42, and 47 in a field of 47. We followed that up with a resounding loss to Mayfair. We beat LaMirada, suffered a heart- breaking loss to Downey and got by Excelsior. It was the Lynwood meet that completed the metamorphosis from a motley group to a team. He has been involved in several activities including displaying his art at the All-Hiag School Art Show at Cerritos College and this year won an award for one of his drawings in the show. He intends to be a commercial artist or architect. Rich Ballou's talents as poet and creative writer could not have passed unrecognized. Although only a junior this year at BHS, Rich has impressed many with his imaginative yet realistic characters and witty poems. Looking to the future, Rich plans to attend UC Santa Barbara to study history. Donpig-Simp-ions' abilities and dedication to the BHS Band can easily be recognized when noting his lenghty list of accomplishments: Band president (73- 74), Band vice-president (72-73), Senior Drum Major (73-74), Jazz-rock Ensemble (70-74), Concert Band (70-74), Marching Band (70-74), Pep Band (70-74). He plans to major in economics come September and minor in music. 1 ared«6frwer- (with the gold inlays) was a transfer student from Idaho and was a major contribution to the Choir, Ensem- ble and the Theater Dept. J ared's distinctive manner and striking personality endeared him to both students and teachers alike and BHS will miss his smile. Shelly Hatch is an accom- plished pianist and all around solid musician. Her totally indi- vidual style puts her in that something special category. 146 As co-directors of this year's modern dance show, £oaita_ILato and I.uann Furusho have been instrumental in organizing a variety of activities in our dance department. They both took part in the Cal State Fullerton Dance Festival and applied many newly learned techniques to our own show. Bonita will be attending UCLA this fall and Luann plans to study nursing. Peter Myers was an extremely valuabe mem- ber of our Theatrical Dept, during his four years here. Besides acting in such porductions as 'This Little Hand, Wall to Wall War , Sandbox, Up tire Down Staircase, and Caught in the Villians Web, he ran costumes and makeup for Time Out for Ginger,: and starred in How tire Grinch Stole Christmas. He is presently playing in the Cerritos College production of Guys and Dolls. Pat Devine worked on the potter's wheel for nearly two years and has shown exceptional growth in his skill. He has worked hard and long in perfect- ing his tcchinque and his work has paid off with being able to produce some very beautiful ceramic work. His goal is to major in police science in college but he will always have ceramics as a vocational skill. Diane Abegg has been described not only as an ex- ceptional seamstress, but as an exceptional and gracious person, as well. Her positive attitude is reflected in her knitting, coiling, stitchery, wall hangings, decorative accessories and garments. A junior this year, she'll be doing advanced work in tailoring and custom dressmaking next year. Diane is looking forward to studying merchan- dizing in tire future. 147 The day I heard all the trees were dead I worried about the summer shade I tried not to let it go to my head The day I heard all the trees were dead But I couldn't forget about what he said I looked for seeds, went and got my spade. The day I heard all the trees were dead I worried about the summer shade. Glen Hopper Jody Gillen The beach was big, the waves were small I stood next to my boyfriend who was very tall He likes the waves, he likes the ocean So I gave him a sip of my magic potion. As soon as he took it a swell came in It made me happy just for him. He quickly jumped up for he couldn't believe his eyes Those small waves had doubled in size. As he looked at me with a gleam in his eyes And started to whisper sad good-byes He said little friend I hope you see, The ocean is the only place for me. And so he left with his board in his hands And I buried the potion in the sand. After a few days the swell died. And so he came back and stood by my side. He said I've had enough waves for awhile, And we walked down the beach with a smile. 148 I was sitting here thinking of my past No one knows how I really feel Can't believe it went so fast I was sitting here thinking of my past It was like a play without the whole cast What I did makes me feel like a heel I was sitting here thinking of my past No one knows how I really feel Jackie Allen ZJTO)E R C£ASS(uETj 151 Junior Class Officers 152 Sherry Mecum, Sec. of Pub.; Rita Silver, Class Rep.; Danny Thompson, Pres.; Andrea Matcham, Vice Pres.; Dana Watson, Sgt. at Arms; Alice Hergonson, Treas.; Debbie Mandas, Sec.; Lynn McCluggage, Sec of Act.; Kathie Back, Class Rep. MISS JOAN McCORMICK The Junior Class officers, led by dynamic Dan Thompson, not only knew where the action was, they were right there creating it. While their sale of See's candy suckers contributed to their treasury, their sale of Bucs All Right buttons con- tributed, more importantly, to Bellflower High's school spirit. A hilarious donkey basketball game started off Homecoming week at a fever pitch, and only the rain could dampen the enthusiasm all the Homecoming activities produced. In spite of the rain the Juniors' Mother Hubard Shoe float was a successful tribute to international friendship. All the officers were involved in planning tills year's big event, a spectacular prom. 1. What do you think of schools? 2. Why do you come to school? 3. The best way to teach a subject, politics in particular, is to put the student in the actual situation of authority or prestige. An example would be the Model United Nations (MUN) that the members of the Political Science Club attended at U. C. Riverside. At the MUN, students discuss, debate, and compromise on the same issues that the delegates of the real United Nations encounter. By participation in these mock assemblies, such as the United Nations, the student will be able to understand the problems that may face nations of the world and how to live with them. 192 Mareque Aoki Roger D.
