POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL The ground crunches beneath sock-laden feet; tired eyes peer blearily, canopied by icicyled eyelashes; lungs gasp for air; nerves are on edge, readied for danger. Pcarys' exploration of the North Pole? No—-it's Kctchums' senior squad out on the frosty fields of Caruthcrs Park, practic- ing manuevers for the 1972-73 powderpuff football game. Worry' proved needless the night of the game. Head coach Dave Ketchum perceptively brought his umbrella, prepared for nature's tears of pity for the juniors. There were no stars in the sky, they were on the field. Dis- guised in white jerseys, they shone so brightly the opposistion seemed blinded. With nary a pass, the seniors darted to a dazzling 30-0 victory. Diane Schenk and Allyson Anthony; aided by Peggy Traxcls' magnet hands snatching interceptions, a defense comparable to a rushing block wall holding the junior offense to one first down in the entire game and nothing on the scoreboard, and an unbelievably excellent offensive line; scored the double digits that made history. With their second shut-out, the '72- '73Senior Squad went on record as the only team since the birth of powder- puff football at Bellflower High to achieve championship twice in a row.

72: TWENTY YEARS OF SPIRIT Homecoming '72 was beseiged by wet weather but nothing could dampen the spirit of the Buccaneers. The week was filled with traditional activities--a pie eating contest, a pizza iioot, an assembly introducing the royal court, and a cavalcade of reminiscences, headed by Jerry Quarry, parading to the theme of Those Were The Days . The days were filled with the spirit of giving, fun, and competition--and of sadness and respect at the tragic death of a fellow. These pages, as was Homecoming '72, are dedicated to the memory of sophomore Vince Bennett. 19
