We have gone our ways togetherg We must face a great new world now, But we're meeting at the crossroads Always fighting to the last. And from here our ways must sever. To the teachers we are leaving, Friends and fellow students, too, To the ones who've always helped us, We must say good-by to you. WILLIE SMITH Class Poet. In spite of the trials and tribulations that confront the freshmen in every high school, a successful year passed by with Marie Jones as president of the class and Miss Price as sponsor. This was a class of loyal supporters of clubs and athletics, as well as loyal supporters of the school. When school opened the next year it admitted about the same groupg a few lost and a few added. This was a class very different from the humble class that were freshmen only a year previous. We had, however, begun to feel our importance as sophomores. This year the class chose Anna Friedli as president and Miss Smithson as sponsor. The sophomore class wcn the prize for getting the most food for the banquet, the prize for putting on the best stunt as Stunt Night, and the honor of having the best cheering section at basketball games. In the class basketball tourna- ment the sophomore boys went to the finals but the girls were beaten in the first round. Another year passed by as happy as the preceding year, if not happier. In 1938 this class had reached its junior year well on its way toward four happy years at Bellevue. Homer Maynard was elected president of the class and Miss Beasley sponsor. The class played an outstanding part in athletics and also furnished many leaders and officers for various activities in the school. This class sponsored a trip to the Future Farmer Camp, in honor of the seniors, an annual entertainment sponsored by the junior class. As this school year of 1939 is gradually nearing a close the senior class, under the capable leadership of Van Grizzard, the sponsorship of Jimmy Edwards, and the advising ability of Prof. G. E. Horn, are looking forward both joyfully and regretfully as we leave Bellevue and step out into the world. The class undertook one of the biggest undertakings of any previous class, producing the BELLEVUE OWL, the second annual ever to be produced by Bellevue. With happy memories we look back over the four years we spent at Bellevue and with these happy thoughts in mind, we face the unknown world. MARVIN REAMS, Class Historian. 'ffrmgv SENIOR PROPHECY As I wandered slowly through Centennial Park, I began to look back over the days of the past at Bellevue. I had often thought of the good old school chums and those who guided us through one of the most important parts of our lives. I began to wonder what had happened to all those seniors. Down in the low shady part of the park I saw an old man, whose hair and beard was hoar with age. He held in one hand a large scythe and wore an old ragged gown. He said in a low trembling voice, Come, my boy, and I will tell you what you Wish to know, I thought he was just a crazy old lunatic, but how did he know that I wanted to know anything? After all, it was a bit mysterious, but since I was at leisure at that time, I went and sat with him. He asked me if I would like for him to tell me of some of my schoolmates. I said, Yes, by all means, go ahead. Many of your friends are well spoken of, such as: Homer Maynard, speaker of the House of Representativesg William Holmes Smith, the President's private secretaryg and Edith Ethridge, who has just startled the universe by marrying the Duke of Pinkeye. There are many more who have accomplished much in other tields. And now let's consider some more of our beloved seniors. Van Grizzard is now a fortunate storekeeper who has taken the H. D. O'Brien business. J. Thomas Hirs- brunner is a hog dealer and Joe Kid Collier is a veterinarian. Deurelle Craighead is the publisher of the Cregg-Head Shorthand Book. Dennis Johnson and Ed Boquo are the recent publishers of a new Geometry Book. Howard Fisher is the pro- prietor of the White Racer Bottling Works and his friend, Harry Wells, is in the pork business at Catalina Islands. Johnny Horton is the leader of his family orchestra. Dorcas Herron, Iva and Ethel Cunningham, Elise Harness, and Lula Hargis have all finished nurse's training and are experienced nurses. Yes, and I believe there are two school teachers from this class-Carlene Carter is teaching Home Economics, and Jewel Deal is teaching English. Roger Clark is crooning over station P-U-N-K and Marvin Reams is an NBC sports announcer. Marie Jones is a style designer for a popular clothing tirm. Virginia Bates has just appeared among the radio stars and Frances Watkins has qualified for an air stewardess. From the business side of life we turn to the romantic. Elton Boone, a silver-iieet truck driver is a proud father of four kids. Laura DeMoss was an advertising manager for B. Levitan Furniture Company until one of the Smith boys hooked her. Mary Frances Reason- over has lassoed a cowboy and tied the knot. Lena Linton has picked a settled home life for her career. Hattie Moore has gone to the top as a movie star and has found her long lost Romeo. Mary Ruth Walton, a society cream puff, has won the honor of being the best dressed woman in America, As for entertainment, Kelly Hall has opened a large theatre and has employed Mildred Dean and Vera Ensey as box ofiice girls. James Vaughn is a Marine Lieutenant and Boyd Jenkins, also with Uncle Sam, is Captain of a battleship. I interrupted very abruptly and asked about some athletes who went to Bellevue. Elton Hulan and Charles Smith are All-American footballers at Mississippi, and Robert Megling has made the grade with Tyler, Texas. Now that the time has come for me to part, I say, 'Time marches on and so do the BELLEVUE SENIORS or '39.' Half dazed I found that this was only a prophecy. J. B. ELIZER, Class Prophet. The prospect for a good team seemed doubtful, but due to the hard work and determined spirit of the boys and the splendid coaching of Mr, Jimmy Edwards, Bellevue enjoyed a very successf'ul season, losing only one game, which was lost to Donelson by one point. History repeated itself when we again played Donelson for fourth position in the play-off of the Nashville Interscholastic League. . Fred Perkerson was captain of the team and played a great part in the games won by his team. Among the seniors to bid farewell to high school football are Fred Perkerson, Van Grizzard, Joe Collier, Robert Megling, Elton Hulan, Charles Smith, Charles Vaupel, Paul Gassaway, Evans Tucker, and Johnny Horton. 7 BASKETBALL Bellevue High opened its basketball season with seven lettermen returning for the boys and six for the girls. The girls, with Anna Friedli as captain, won 12 games, tied 2 and lost 2. In the district tournament, minus the services of Sara Sexton, Owl Guard, the team lost by 2 points. The leading girl scorer of the Bellevue Owlettes was Mary Castleman, junior forward, with a total of 225 for the entire year. Willie Smith, senior, with a total of 140 points was the high-point maker for the Owls. Lucille Austin, guard, was on the All-City team for the second successive yearg Anna Friedli, center, made the Second All-City team. The following boys and girls will not be back next year: Boys- Captain Fred Per- kerson, Willie Smith, Elton Hulan, and Homer Maynardg Girls-Anna Friedli and Lucille Austin.
