The studentls problems, which to them often seem insurmountable, are quickly diminished at the hands of Bellevue's experienced counselors. When they are not making mole hills out of mountainous problems, they are kept busy making out schedules, and advising students concerning courses to follow, tests to take, and requirements to heed Bellevue High's counselors are particularly noted for prodding students to plan for a college education and a career. 5 W 5 Mrs. Ruth Gibson: lf Senior English, Head of English Departmentg B.A. - University of Washington Miss Betty jane Hickey: Sophomore, Junior, Senior Humani- ties, Sophomore Eng- lishg B.A. - Cornell University, M.A. - Uni- versity of Washington Mr. William Lamont: Sophomore, Junior, Senior Humanities, Sophomore Englishg B. Each day life will confront you with decisions which will measure you in terms of your maturity, judgment, character and values. How you 'measure up' depends upon the standards of society, your family, and your friends, and more important, their influence upon the standards you make your own. These standards often conflict, yet are two sides of the same coin. Suddenly, without warning, they may challenge you to assume gigantic dimensionsg generally they will grow with you slowly and cautiously. Your character will not only be the outgrowth but also the tempering agent of these challenges. Your own individual Lmeasuring up' is the most impor- tant, daysby-day decision you can make. Churchill during the battle of Britain . . . Schweitzer in Africa . . . Kennedy at the Bay of Pigs . . . an athlete in defeat . . . a human being measuring himself and being measured. Only the individual knows the true magni- tude of his dimensions. ln Hamlet, Polonius advised his son, Laertes, Wllhis above all-to thine own self be true, And, it must follow as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Kim Hoelting speaks in Masters Of The Literary Arts English is the fundamental step in the stairway to better learning. These tried and worthy literary masters form the dynamic body of our English department. They know that, indisputably, English is basic in its need to any other field of learning. Without an understanding of the language a history test is futileg a science report-impossible. And in all other fields of learning what common tongue is spoken? The English department of Bellevue High is the gateway to the know- ledge of the world. as . 2 -V.
