Tl|is election ?ear brought politics home to our campus 1. In November, Ronald. Reagan was elected as a Republican to the position of President of the United States. On March 30, he was struck by an assas¬ sin’s bullet, but recovered to carry on with the responsibilities of his office. 2. President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, was defeated by a landslide in his bid for reelection. 3. Alan Dixon, the Democrat candidate for the United States Senate, and Dave O’Neal, his Republican opponent, used the Auditorium as the setting for the fourth of their state-wide debates. In November, Alan Dixon became the first native of Belleville to be elected to the Senate. Mr. Dixon and Mr. O’Neal are both graduates of our high school and were met by a large and enthusi¬ astic hometown audience on their return to the campus. Current Events 19

Kou did th ? year go in song, fads, and activities? People wore what they felt comfortable in. Designer je ans, dresses of all lengths, and a variety of shoes lined the hallways. Some people dressed as the “Urban Cowboy while others turned “preppy.” Buttons, which proclaimed love for a favorite group, school, or saying, were tacked on jackets and shirts. Disco slowly moved out as punk rock and new wave worked its way in. Dieting, jogging, and exercise classes became regular habits. This was all part of our life. 18 Daily Routine
