Homemaking is vital From the home economics area on the first (loor of the Main Building came the painful cries caused by the burned fingers of cooks, the questioning hum of the sewing room learners wondering how they could make such mistakes, and the “oohs” and “aahs echoing from girls planning weddings and their future homes. The homemaking curriculum covered not only cook¬ ing, sewing, nutrition, and family living, but housing and meal planning. Planning a meal is a much harder task than it seems to be. Home Economics 27

Students study the principles of electricity. Industrial arts creates a world The Industrial Education Department has been offering many more courses than most students realize. Subjects ranged from auto shop and welding to mechanical drawing. From the back of the stadium came the “buzz” of the welding equipment and the “roar” of the motor. Although only five girls took the courses offered by this department, they found them very challenging. As students odd to the campus, so do plants. Having choreographed her own floor routine, lynn Muren performed it in front of her class. The warning signs of cancer were the topic of discussion in health classes. Freshman girls executed their skills in volleyball. Exercise for physical and mental health The greatest lesson learned in physical education was cooperation. In gym classes the individual became part of a team. Quick thinking and coordination were essen¬ tial in a range of sports such as soccer, field hockey, badminton, tumbling, weightlifting, and tennis. P.E. was an outlet for the everyday routine. After all, what would the day be without a cold locker room and an even colder shower? Cooch Carr shows the girls how to leap over the hurdles. 28 Physical Education
